MARYVILLE - The message remains the same from Head Coach
Clint Helton, "Our focus is keeping a humble mindset, coming out to work every day to get better, and to stay hungry".
After sweeping Asbury, the Scots sit alone in first place in the CCS at 8-1 and 21-8 overall, and have swept two consecutive conference series. Maryville defeated the Eagles 4-0 and 10-0 today, on the backs of
Nic Mirabella and
Caleb Jinks, who both threw complete games on the mound without a single run scoring.
Mirabella improved to 4-1 on the year with a 4.81 ERA, while Jinks improved to 4-2 with a 4.66 ERA. Jinks has the fewest walked batters in the conference with only three after another game with zero (next fewest is 8). He sits in sixth place in the CCS in runs allowed (20) as well. Mirabella has the second fewest losses in the conference (1), third most innings pitched (48.2), fourth in strikeouts (46) (1st in looking strikeouts with 18, tied with
Kyle Timko). The pitchers continue the trend of great pitching for the Scots. As a team the Scots have the second most strikeouts in the conference with 219 (three behind Piedmont).
Game One
The first game of the doubleheader was a pitchers duel and low scoring affair. The Scots only broke threw in two innings, scoring twice in the third and twice again in the sixth for insurance runs.
Frank Derner brought in the first two runs for Maryville on a single to center field, plating
Colin Dunworth and
Reece Jordan for their respective 35th and 30th runs of the year, good for second and fourth in the conference and first and second on the team. This was also Derner's 29th RBI, good for second in the conference (behind only Dunworth with 30).
Zach Devries and
Matt Hall would both score in the sixth on consecutive errors to put the final tally at 4-0 Scots.
Game Two
A better offensive showing for MC in the second game saw 10 runs come home, spread across four different innings, eventually ending the game by run-rule in the eighth.
Brayden Evans and
Zach Devries both scored in the second inning on a
Matt Hall double to left field. Hall leads the team with six doubles for the year.
Colin Dunworth would then single to left field and bring home Hall and
Reece Jordan, putting the Scots up 4-0 after two.
The fourth would see
Reece Jordan bring in Hall on a single, and Jordan then scoring on a sac fly by
Frank Derner. 6-0 Scots.
Nick Curry would bring in two runners in the seventh on a single up the middle, plating Franker Derner and
Ashton Whiteaker. 8-0 Scots.
Needing two runs to secure the run-rule victory, a wild pitch would score one of them with Mall Hall being the beneficiary. Curry would walk the game off with a hard hit single up the middle that brought home
Reece Jordan, 10-0 Scots.
