Survive and Advance!

Scots Walk-Off Piedmont to Advance to Semifinal Round

MARYVILLE - The Scots continue to give us stressful and entertaining games, coming from behind - yet again - to defeat Piedmont and advance to the CCS Tournament semifinals.

How it happened

Just like the game against LaGrange in the semifinals, Maryville jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Frank Derner doubled in the first inning to bring home Reece Jordan for the game's first score. Matt Hall then doubled in the second inning, plating Zach Devires, to give the Scots the 2-0 advantage.

Piedmont would answer back in the third inning, bringing in their first run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, and then a sacrifice fly to deep center field that plated the tying run.

Reece Jordan

Zach Devries hit the third double of the game for the Scots, bringing around Jacob Johnston and Frank Derner in the third inning to retake a two-run lead 4-2. The Lions would score the next three runs of the game, beginning with the first home run of the tournament, a solo shot over the left field wall in the fourth inning, a ground-out in the top of the ninth that brought in a run to tie the game and send it to extra innings, and then single in the tenth to take their first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the tenth, "Big Hit Whit" Ashton Whiteaker sent a hit up the middle, scoring Mat Hall and tying the game back up, saving the game and the season for the Scots. Neither team would plate a run in the eleventh.

Reece Jordan would hit a ball straight up the middle past the shortstop, bringing around Brayden Evans for the game-winning walk-off run, Jordan's second such hit of the season.

Pitching and Hitting

Starting pitcher Caleb Jinks had a solid outing, going five innings and giving up just three runs on three hits while striking out four batters. Mitchell Grannan would come in relief of Jinks in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing just two hits and no runs. Xavier Resto would then enter the game and ride out the rest of the game on the mound, throwing five innings, getting two strikeouts, and allowing just two runs to cross the plate, earning his fifth win of the season, still lossless for the year.

Reece Jordan, Zach Devries, Frank Derner, and Matt Hall were the offensive leaders for the Scots on the day. Jordan was 3-6 from the plate, scoring one run along with plating the winning RBI. Hall was 3-5 with a score and an RBI as well. Devries plated two runs on two hits with a score of his own, and Derner had two hits a run, and an RBI as well.

Next Up

The Scots advance to play Belhaven in the semifinals, with a game time TBD due to weather delays.

The official word from the CCS is that we will restart games at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday), with Huntingdon and LaGrange restarting at that time (the game was delayed at the bottom of the second). Weather permitting, we hope to play the Belhaven vs. Maryville game tomorrow as well. Further details from there will be announced when solidified.
