MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Maryville College women's soccer team opened Homecoming weekend with a 3-0 shutout of Southwestern University on Friday night at the MC Soccer Complex, using a three-goal performance and another strong showing from goalkeeper Paige Silva to earn a Southern Athletic Association victory.
The Scots celebrated a piece of program history at halftime, honoring the 2001 women's soccer team — the first Maryville squad to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The current Scots added to that Homecoming atmosphere with a second-half surge that put the match away.
Maryville broke through in the 32nd minute when Katie Corley found the back of the net. Katie Cotten and Ruby Saylor assisted on the opening goal, giving the Scots a 1-0 advantage they carried into halftime.
Cotten took over late in the second half, scoring twice in a five-minute span to secure the victory. Saylor provided the assist on Cotten's first goal in the 80th minute before Cotten struck again in the 85th minute to complete the scoring and seal the shutout.
The Scots finished with 19 shots, putting 11 on target, while Southwestern recorded 15 shots and eight shots on goal. Maryville's defense held firm throughout the night, with Silva making eight saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Cotten led the Scots with two goals, while Corley finished with a goal and an assist. Saylor contributed two assists in the victory.
Maryville improved to 5-4-4 overall and 2-3 in SAA play with the win.
