MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Scots put together a dominant offensive performance and a gritty road win Saturday, rolling past Grove City College 17-0 before knocking off Pfeiffer University 7-3 to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
Game One: Maryville 17, Grove City 0
Maryville erupted for 17 runs on 17 hits in a run-rule victory, highlighted by a six-run third inning and an eight-run fifth that broke the game wide open.
After scratching across a first-inning run on an RBI single from Brayden Evans, the Scots exploded in the third. Evans delivered again with a run-scoring knock before Frank Derner lined a two-run single to left. A passed ball plated another run, and Jay Pichardo capped the frame with an RBI single. Irvin Hernandez added a sacrifice fly as Maryville built a commanding 7-0 advantage.
The fifth inning removed all doubt. Pichardo roped an RBI double, Hernandez followed with a run-scoring single, and the Scots drew three straight walks to force in runs. Evans continued his big night with a two-run single up the middle, and Derner lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 13-0. Later in the inning, Nick Curry delivered a two-run single to push the margin to 15-0.
Evans finished a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBIs, while Derner drove in two and Pichardo added two RBIs and a double. Masin Hall scored three times, and the Scots drew six walks to complement their 17-hit attack.
On the mound, Kaden Wimsatt earned the win in relief, tossing 3.2 hitless innings with six strikeouts. Caleb Jinks and Gavin Mohrman combined with Wimsatt to limit Grove City to just one hit while striking out eight.
Game Two: Maryville 7, Pfeiffer 3
In the nightcap at Joe Ferebee Field, Maryville used timely power and aggressive baserunning to secure the sweep.
Colin Dunworth put the Scots on the board in the fourth with a solo home run to deep left. After Pfeiffer tied the game in the bottom half, Maryville regained the lead in the fifth when Hernandez scored on a sacrifice fly from Det Detwiller.
The Scots created separation in the sixth with heads-up baserunning. Dunworth doubled and later stole home as Brayden Evans swiped second, giving Maryville a 3-1 edge.
The decisive blow came in the seventh. After a Jay Pichardo single and Hernandez sacrifice bunt, Hall launched a two-run homer to left to stretch the lead to 5-1. Evans followed later in the inning with an RBI single to plate Dunworth, capping a three-run frame.
Maryville added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI groundout from Hernandez.
Dunworth had a monster game at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Hall added a homer and two RBIs, while Evans contributed an RBI and a stolen base.
On the mound, Xavier Resto picked up the win with four strong innings of relief, striking out eight and allowing just one unearned run. Titus Torbett started and allowed one run over four innings, and Logan Denton closed the door despite late pressure in the ninth.
The Scots are 3-0 after sweeping the Joe Ferebee Classic, and have outscored their opponents 41-4. They will now head to Atlanta for the Oglethrope Invitational, where they will play Wooster, Transylvania, and Oglethrope on Feb.21 & 22.
