Late Runs Lift Transylvania in Series Finale at Scotland Yard

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Maryville College baseball wrapped up its opening weekend homestand Sunday afternoon at Scotland Yard, falling 4–0 to Transylvania in the series finale after the Pioneers scored late to break a scoreless game.

The contest was a pitchers' duel through seven innings, highlighted by a standout start from freshman left-hander Titus Torbett. Torbett delivered seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out eight and walking one, keeping the Scots firmly in control deep into the afternoon.

Maryville's offense consistently put pressure on the Transylvania pitching staff, finishing with 11 hits, but was unable to push a run across.

Frank Derner led the Scots with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Brayden Evans went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base, while Masin Hall, Luke Winter, Drew Henry, Luke Wright, Lucas Mendoza, and Nick Curry each added a hit.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning, when Transylvania used a walk and hit-by-pitch before scoring on a wild pitch to take a 1–0 lead. The Pioneers then added three insurance runs in the ninth, capitalizing on defensive miscues and a late RBI single to stretch the margin to 4–0.

Maryville threatened in the bottom of the ninth, as Derner and Mendoza recorded back-to-back singles to put runners on base, but reliever Patton secured the final outs to preserve the shutout.

Despite the result, the Scots' pitching staff limited Transylvania to just eight hits. Xavier Resto and Gavin Mohrman combined to cover the final two innings out of the bullpen.

Maryville (3-3) returns to action Tuesday with a road trip to Berry for a midweek nonconference matchup.
