Baseball Falls to Piedmont in CCS Opener

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Piedmont used early offense and strong pitching to defeat Maryville College 5-0 Friday evening in the series opener at Scotland Yard.

The Lions broke through in the third inning when Cole Ellis delivered an RBI single and Cruz Mullinix followed with another run-scoring hit to give Piedmont a 2-0 advantage. Piedmont added three more runs in the fourth inning behind RBI hits from Ellis and Carter Few, extending the lead to 5-0.

Maryville starter Kyle Timko worked seven innings and struck out four, but took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits. Pete Pappas came on in relief and tossed two scoreless innings while striking out three.

The Scots finished with five hits in the contest, with Det Dettwiller, Frank Derner, Nick Curry, Lucas Mendoza, and Jay Pichardo each recording one. Maryville threatened in the second inning with runners on base but was unable to push a run across.

Piedmont starter Andrew Misirly earned the win after throwing seven shutout innings and striking out six before turning the game over to the bullpen for the final two frames.
