MARYVILLE, Tenn. - On senior day, Maryville's men's tennis team battled against Southern Virginia University, looking to even the series score to 1-1 after the Scots were narrowly defeated in 2025. This year, Maryville put the petal to the metal in their match, and steamrolled their way to a 7-0 victory against the Knights, and sent their record to 6 wins and 4 losses.
Before the match, the Scots honored three key seniors for the development of Maryville College's men's tennis program. Head Coach Doug Corbett and Maryville's best John Painter collaborated to honor Jonathan Crane, Jackson Meyer, and James Smith with kind words that detailed their importance to Maryville and the world. All three of them got the start, with Smith playing #1 singles and doubles, Meyer playing #2 doubles, and Crane capping it off at #6 singles.
The tone that was set from the beginning was competitive, as #3 pair Grant Price and Benjamin Schneider took hold of their match in a late swing of momentum and won 6-2. The doubles point came down to #1 pair Steven Fitzsimmons and James Smith, and through many twists, turns and saved match points, they took the doubles point for the Scots, winning 7-6 (7-4).
Leading into singles, Price was the first to get another point on the board for the Scots, taking his singles match at the #2 position 6-2, 6-0. Shortly after, Fitzsimmons rolled to another victory on the year, this one being at #4 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline. To wrap up the match, Smith clinched for the Scots, winning at the #1 position 6-2 6-3 and securing the win against a team that beat Maryville last year.
The rest of the Scots shined as well. Field Myatt adds another win on his impressive year, winning his match comfortably at the #3 slot 6-3, 6-3. Crane marked another win with poise, taking the match 6-3, 6-4. Luka Romano had the most competitive match of the afternoon, and proved to be battle tested by winning 6-4, 7-5 and completing the sweep for the Scots at the #5 singles slot.
