HIGH POINT, N.C. – Maryville College baseball fell to Montclair State 11-1 Thursday evening in nonconference action.
The Scots struck first in the third inning when Jay Pichardo singled and later scored on an RBI single up the middle from Brayden Evans, giving Maryville a 1-0 advantage. Pichardo led the Scots at the plate with two hits, while Evans and Colin Dunworth added the other Maryville base knocks.
Montclair State responded in the fourth inning, tying the game on an RBI single from Matt Kaliske before taking the lead on a sacrifice fly by Chase Fischer. The Red Hawks broke the game open in the fifth inning with five runs, highlighted by Fischer's grand slam to center field that pushed the Montclair State lead to 7-1.
Maryville starter Kaden Wimsatt took the loss after allowing five runs over 4.1 innings. Logan Denton and Read Butler provided relief on the mound for the Scots. Montclair State starter Colin Dowlen earned the win, allowing one run on three hits over six innings while striking out six, before Logan Shumard closed the game with three scoreless innings for the save.
The Red Hawks added four more runs in the ninth inning to seal the final margin. Montclair State finished with 10 hits in the contest, while Maryville was limited to four hits on the night.
The Scots will face #9 Adrian tomorrow at 5:00 PM.
