MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville faced off against #20 Rhodes in a doubleheader at Scotland Yard on Tuesday, experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions with a loss in the first game and a narrow victory in the second.
In the first game, Maryville fell to Rhodes 21-7. The Scots tallied eight hits and five walks, but the Lynx capitalized with 16 hits, including a home run and a triple, to secure the win. Maryville jumped to an early lead in the first inning by scoring five runs.
Brayden Evans singled and later scored, while
Colin Dunworth and
Lucas Mendoza contributed RBI singles.
Jay Pichardo followed with a two-RBI double, and
Masin Hall was hit by a pitch to bring in another run, giving the Scots a 5-1 lead after one inning.
Rhodes responded by narrowing the gap in the third inning. Ben Daniel's RBI single and a scoring error allowed two runs, followed by an RBI groundout, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Scots through three innings. In the fourth inning, the Lynx took the lead with a two-RBI double by Daniel and an RBI single, scoring three runs to make it 7-5 after four innings. Rhodes extended its lead in the fifth with six more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single and a three-run homer by Corbin Martens, pushing the score to 13-5. Maryville managed to score one run in the bottom of the fifth when Pichardo scored on
Det Dettwiller's RBI single, bringing it to 13-6.
Rhodes added two more runs in the sixth on a pair of bases-loaded walks, making it 15-6. In the seventh, Rhodes scored once more, but Maryville answered with a run of its own as Pichardo scored on Evans' RBI groundout, adjusting the score to 16-7 through seven innings. Despite a scoreless eighth inning for both teams, the Lynx tallied five additional runs in the ninth, capitalizing on an error and a sacrifice fly to round out the game, with the final score being Rhodes 21, Maryville 7.
In the second game, Maryville edged Rhodes 2-1. The Scots took an early lead with a run in the first inning and secured their victory with another in the sixth. The pitching staff held the Lynx to just two hits, striking out eight while allowing a single run off a home run in the fourth inning.
Xavier Resto delivered a strong performance for MC, pitching 6 innings and allowing only 2 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4, with no walks. He threw 86 pitches, 60 of which were strikes, and secured the win to improve his record to 3-2.
Pete Pappas came in as a reliever, pitching 3 innings, striking out 4, and allowing 1 hit-by-pitch, securing the save with 40 pitches, including 23 strikes. Together, Resto and Pappas combined for 8 strikeouts and limited the Lynx to minimal scoring opportunities.
The Scots secured a narrow victory over Rhodes, with a pivotal sixth inning proving decisive.
Colin Dunworth's single to left set the stage, advancing on an error that allowed
Frank Derner to reach first.
Nick Curry then delivered a crucial RBI single, scoring Dunworth for what became the game-winning run, capitalizing on a defensive miscue for an unearned tally. Earlier, MC capitalized on a first-inning opportunity when
Brayden Evans singled and later scored on Derner's RBI single, providing an initial lead. The Lynx tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run from Cooper Angilly, but the Scots were able to keep Rhodes at bay the rest of the way to wrap up the 2026 home slate with a win.
