Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – Maryville split a doubleheader against Covenant on Saturday, starting with a commanding 23-2 victory in the first game, followed by a narrow 9-8 loss in the second.

In Game 1, Maryville amassed 26 hits, including five doubles, two triples, and a home run, while scoring 10 runs in the second inning to establish an early lead. Covenant managed seven hits and two runs, but Maryville's pitching allowed only two earned runs over seven innings, securing a comprehensive win. Covenant took an early lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly, RBI by Daniel Counts, putting them up 1-0. Maryville responded in the second inning, scoring 10 runs. Colin Dunworth scored the first run on a throwing error, marking a season-high with four runs scored in the game. Logan Krause had a standout performance with a season-high of 3 runs and 4 hits, and Jay Pichardo achieved a season-high with 3 hits and 5 RBIs. Brayden Evans and Det Dettwiller each hit doubles to drive in runs, and Pichardo capped the inning with a three-RBI triple. The Scots led 10-1 after the second inning.

In the third inning, Frank Derner hit a two-run homer, further extending Maryville's lead. Krause added another RBI, making the score 13-2 through three innings. Maryville added another run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly by Masin Hall, who recorded a season-high total of 3 RBIs, bringing the score to 14-2. The fifth inning saw the Scots explode for nine more runs. Dunworth and Krause both contributed RBIs, while Pichardo and Derner continued their strong performances with additional RBIs. Maryville held a commanding 23-2 lead through five innings. Neither team scored in the remaining innings, and the Scots maintained their defensive performance to end the game with a 23-2 victory.

Brayden Evans posted a stellar performance, scoring three runs, collecting four hits, and driving in three runs. Frank Derner showcased his power, hitting a home run among his four hits while driving in four runs. Colin Dunworth had an impressive game, crossing the plate four times, matching it with four hits, and stealing three bases. Kaden Wimsatt delivered a strong performance on the mound for Maryville against Covenant. Over 7 innings, Wimsatt allowed 7 hits and 2 earned runs, while striking out 5 batters. He issued only 1 walk and threw 104 pitches, with 72 of them being strikes. Wimsatt improved his record to 4-3 with his complete game effort.

In Game 2, Maryville fell to Covenant 9–8 in a tightly contested game. The Scots recorded 11 hits, including two doubles, and stole five bases, but Covenant's late two-run inning in the ninth secured its victory. Logan Krause posted a strong performance with three hits, two runs, and one RBI, while Luke Winter added to the team's efforts by driving in three runs and collecting two hits, including a double. Frank Derner was active on the basepaths, scoring once and stealing two bases. Det Dettwiller contributed with two hits and one run, rounding out the top performers for the Scots.

Titus Torbett pitched 5 2/3 innings for MC, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out four without issuing a walk. He threw a total of 97 pitches, 68 of which were strikes. 

Looking ahead, the Scots will travel to face LaGrange at 7 p.m. ET Thursday, April 23 in LaGrange, Georgia.
