LaGRANGE, Ga. – Maryville faced off against LaGrange in a thrilling doubleheader on Friday at Cleaveland Field, resulting in a split as the Scots took game one 14-8 before falling in game two 7-4.
Game One
Maryville exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by two home runs and two triples, to secure a decisive 14-8 victory. LaGrange initially took control, scoring six runs in the first two innings, including a four-run second inning. The Scots quickly countered with a five-run rally in the fifth, spearheaded by
Det Dettwiller's two-RBI double, followed by
Frank Derner's RBI single and
Colin Dunworth's RBI double. A fielding error allowed two more runs to cross, establishing a comfortable cushion for the Scots.
Masin Hall set an aggressive tone for Maryville with a walk, a stolen base, and a two-run homer earlier in the game.
In the ninth inning, the Scots added insurance runs with
Logan Krause's two-RBI single. The pitching staff effectively closed the door on LaGrange's comeback attempts, stranding runners in scoring position in the eighth.
Kaden Wimsatt started on the mound, pitching 5 innings while allowing 7 earned runs on 11 hits.
Pete Pappas and
Gavin Mohrman contributed in relief, with Mohrman not allowing any runs in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
Standout performances included
Masin Hall with a home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored, while
Det Dettwiller recorded three hits and five RBIs.
Frank Derner added three hits and crossed home plate twice.
Logan Krause also made a mark with two hits, driving in three runs.
Game Two
In the second game of the doubleheader, Maryville was edged by LaGrange, falling 7-4 despite securing nine walks and five stolen bases. LaGrange took an early lead in the first inning, scoring four runs, including a solo homer from Jackson McElvy and RBI hits from Curt Bonner and Nicholas Ford. Maryville responded in the second, narrowing the gap to 4-3 with contributions from
Colin Dunworth,
Lucas Mendoza, and
Irvin Hernandez.
After a few quiet innings, LaGrange extended its lead to 5-3 in the seventh, thanks to a double from Carson Burgamy. In the eighth,
Frank Derner and
Logan Krause combined for a run, but LaGrange countered with two runs of its own, pushing the score to 7-4. The Scots' final inning saw them load the bases, yet they could not capitalize, resulting in LaGrange securing the victory.
Krause stood out again with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Derner and Dunworth each contributed two hits, with Derner scoring a run and drawing a walk.
Det Dettwiller recorded three walks and stole a base.
Logan Denton started for Maryville, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing four earned runs.
Cody Boisvert and
Gavin Mohrman pitched in relief.
Following the split, Maryville's record stands at 25-15 and 9-9 in the conference.
Maryville will next compete in the CCS Championship Tournament next week in Pearl, Mississippi.
