PEARL, Miss. – The Scots secured a tight 3–2 victory over Huntingdon on Thursday at Trustmark Park in the first round of the CCS Tournament. The game had been delayed from 4/29 due to weather.
With the game tied entering the eighth inning, Maryville scored the decisive run to clinch the win.
After the Hawks tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth, Maryville responded in the bottom half. A walk to
Det Dettwiller, followed by a sacrifice bunt and an error, set the stage for
Frank Derner to advance on a fielder's choice.
Logan Krause then delivered a crucial single to right center, allowing Derner to score, which proved to be the game-winning run.
Earlier in the fourth inning, Maryville established its initial lead with a two-run sequence. Dettwiller and Derner set the table with consecutive singles, and
Colin Dunworth capitalized with a double to left center, driving in Dettwiller. Krause added to the tally by bringing home Derner with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Hawks' eighth-inning rally was halted when Maryville's defense held firm, and
Xavier Resto recorded the final out in the ninth to secure the win.
Frank Derner scored two runs and collected two hits, marking the third consecutive game in which he has recorded at least two hits, contributing to the team's overall performance.
