PEARL, Miss. – Maryville College faced tough competition in the CCS Tournament, falling to Piedmont 9-5 and Belhaven 10-2 on Sunday at Trustmark Park.
In the game against Piedmont, the Scots tallied 15 hits but couldn't overcome the Lions' four-run fourth inning.
Kaden Wimsatt pitched for 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits with three walks, throwing 72 pitches with 40 strikes.
Pete Pappas entered in relief, contributing 1 1/3 innings with one earned run, three walks, and one strikeout on 24 pitches (nine strikes).
Gavin Mohrman closed out the game with three innings pitched, giving up one earned run on five hits, walking two, and striking out one, delivering 69 pitches with 40 strikes.
Brayden Evans led the offense with three hits and one RBI.
Logan Krause also stood out with three hits, scoring two runs, while
Frank Derner matched his teammates with three hits.
Lucas Mendoza contributed two RBIs and scored once.
In their matchup against Belhaven, Maryville scored their two runs in the first and sixth innings, but the Blazers' offense proved too strong, accumulating 15 hits, including six doubles, and scoring three runs each in the third, fourth, and seventh innings. The Scots' pitching staff allowed 10 earned runs over eight innings, while Belhaven's defense limited Maryville to eight hits.
The decisive push for Belhaven came in the third inning, where they scored three runs to break a 1-1 tie. After a walk and a double, Hayden Roberts reached on a fielder's choice, allowing a run to score, followed by an RBI single from Owen Abney, and a sacrifice fly by JD Weed brought in the third run of the inning.
Maryville had their moments, starting with
Masin Hall's leadoff single in the first inning, advancing on a sacrifice bunt by
Brayden Evans, setting up
Det Dettwiller's RBI single for an early lead. In the sixth,
Colin Dunworth's RBI double cut into Belhaven's advantage, scoring Evans. However, a groundout ended the threat.
Defensively, the Scots turned a crucial double play in the sixth inning to minimize damage, but the seventh inning saw Belhaven pull away with three more runs, including an RBI double from Weed and a run-scoring single by Jake McCann.
Cody Boisvert started against Belhaven, pitching three innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits, with three strikeouts and one walk.
Titus Torbett followed, giving up three earned runs on three hits in his single inning of work.
Logan Denton pitched two innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out one.
Xavier Resto and
Kyle Timko closed the game, with Resto surrendering one run on two hits in one inning, and Timko finishing with one strikeout in a scoreless inning.
Masin Hall contributed with a hit and a run scored, while
Det Dettwiller recorded two hits and drove in a run.
Colin Dunworth made an impact with two hits, including a double, and collected an RBI while also drawing a walk to reach base multiple times.
This concludes the Scots' run in the CCS tournament and awaits the NCAA tournament selections on May 11.
