Women's Soccer Dominates Division II Opponent

Crushes King 6-1 in Opener

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville College women's soccer continue their winning ways against King University after defeating them 6-1 in their season opener at the MC Soccer Complex. The Scots put their foot on the gas in the first half and didn't look back, pushing the pace and capitalizing on their attacking opportunities.

Coming off a CCS regular season championship last year, the Scots look to keep the momentum running in their first year in the SAA. The Scots scored their opening goal in the 10th minute, with Ruby Walton streaking up the wing before swinging it to Katie Cotten, who scored from the top of the box to put the Scots up 1-0. Six minutes after the opener, Regan Boyd took the ball from King and ran the length of their half, battling past two defenders before shooting a stunner from just inside the box with her non-dominant foot to push the Scots to 2-0 before the end of the half.

Despite the stats appearing to be relatively equal, King had no sustained offensive pressure throughout the game, largely due to the defensive core of Addison Kantor, Gabbie Halliburton, Kaylee Mills, and Katie Ray stifling most of King's chances. Whatever managed to make it through them didn't make it past goalkeeper Paige Silva, who made eight saves in the contest.

More of the same offense came from the Scots in the second half. Re-kicking off the onslaught, Ray, Madison McDonald, and Madylen Miller all flew down the field after a botched King corner, with Ray dealing a cross-field pass to Miller, who laid it off to McDonald for the score just before the 55th minute. King struck back with a goal a couple minutes later, pushing their own counterattack that led to a goal after a spectacular save from Silva that couldn't be contained. However, that proved to be even more fuel for the Scots to continue their goal-scoring ways.

In the 63rd minute, Miller forced a turnover in the King box, dishing it to Lolah Wunderlich who was positioned in the middle of the box for an easy goal to push the lead to 4-1. Six minutes after that, Addison Baggett took possession from King, gave the ball to Cotten and pushed her way into the box, re-claiming the ball after a pass and shot past the goalkeeper, claiming the Scots fifth goal of the night. To top it off, Boyd had another dazzling display of a goal, dribbling past multiple defenders through the box and scored with 40 seconds left on the clock to cap off an amazing night of Scots soccer.

Maryville will look to continue their great form and travel to Roanoke College for their next game, taking place on September 4th. The game will start at 5:00 p.m. and will be available to watch on FloCollege.
