After 110 minutes of soccer dominated by Maryville, the Great South Athletic Conference semi-final game went to penalty kicks. LaGrange would find the back of the net four times to only two for Maryville, breaking the tie and earning the victory for the Panthers on Friday, November 4th in LaGrange, Georgia.
In a game that was void of scoring throughout regulation and overtime, Maryville was dominant. The Scots outshot the Panthers 18-7, put more shots on goal at 10-1, and had more corner kicks at 11-2. Leading the way for Maryville was 2011 GSAC Player of the Year Ashley Howarth. Howarth had six shots with five of them on frame.
After two overtime periods, the game was going to be decided in a shootout. In the shootout LaGrange shot first and found the back of the net. Lauren Ward promptly answered with a goal of her own, knotting the shootout at 1-1. LaGrange would again score and Maryville would again answer when Howarth scored. Both third shooters were unable to put the ball on frame. In the fourth round LaGrange once again found the twine with Maryville unable to answer. LaGrange would win the shootout and the game when their fifth and final shooter put the ball in the net.
This loss breaks the streak of nine consecutive GSAC titles for Maryville. "We are proud of the accomplishments of our program this year, but sad that our seniors had to go out like this," said long time head coach Pepe Fernandez.
