Box Score The Maryville College Lady Scots maintained their hold on first place in the USA South standings with a key 98-57 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon.
MC Head Coach Darrin Travillian used all 16 players in a convincing offensive attack that featured 60 Maryville points in the paint and 50 points contributed by a talented and deep Scots' bench. Defensively, Maryville forced 21 turnovers and secured 29 points off the Bishops' miscues.
The first half featured a 65% shooting effort from the Scots, leading to a 40-30 halftime advantage. MC held the Battling Bishops to only a 34% effort in the second half to secure their 13th consecutive victory.
NC Wesleyan (6-9, 5-3 USA South) was led by Tiffany Bell's 23 points. Bell connected on 9-of-17 shots including a 5-for-11 effort from beyond the arc.
Maryville (14-1, 8-0 USA South) had 13 players score with four performers tossing in double digit points. Senior guard Kiera Payne led MC in both scoring and rebounds with a 19 point, nine rebound afternoon. Payne went 7-for-8 from the field. Freshman Mackenzie Puckett went 7-for-11 from the floor en route to a 16 point game. Janell Menard added a dozen points in 18 minutes of action going 5-for-9 from the field. Tayler Smith added 10 points in 15 minutes of work. Lauren Trent popped three treys to finish with nine points. Lailah Farmer directed the efficient offense with nine assists.
The Scots will return to action tomorrow afternoon when the host Christopher Newport University. The Captains fell to Ferrum 65-55 on Saturday in Ferrum, Virginia. Sunday's matchup is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
