Box Score The Maryville College Lady Scots fell to No. 12 ranked Emory University 68-67 on Sunday evening in Atlanta, Georgia.
A 37-30 halftime lead was not enough to combat 27 MC turnovers that allowed the Eagles to chip away at the Scots lead. Maryville out shot Emory in the field (44% to 38%), from beyond the arc (41% to 33%), and from the charity stripe (71% to 45%) while out rebounding the home team 40-29.
"Despite our turnovers, we had chances to win," stated MC Head Coach Darrin Travillian.
Emory went on a 14-7 run to tie the game 44-44 in the first seven minutes of the second half.
A Lauren Burnett trey put the Scots up 67-64 with a minute remaining, but a Khadijah Sayyid free throw, a Selena Castillo layup and a Savannah Morgan free throw sealed the win for the Eagles.
Emory (4-0) was led by Selena Castillo's 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting. Savannah Morgan added 25 points while going 10-for-19 from the field.
Maryville (4-2) was paced by Lauren Burnett's 18 points. The senior guard was 4-for-9 from beyond the arc while shooting 50% from the field. Sophomore Mackenzie Pucket posted a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Mindy Brackins added eight rebounds while Lailah Farmer dished out five assists while sinking eight points.
"Our team continues to play hard, and we are growing and learning as a team, stated Coach Travillian. "These late game moments will serve us well as we get closer to conference play."
Maryville will travel next Saturday to Sewanee for a non-conference challenge against the University of the South.
