Box Score 2 The Maryville College baseball team moved to 3-1 on the season with a double header split against Averett University in their first USA South Athletic Conference series of the 2013 campaign.
In the first game, Averett rallied from a 4-1 deficit in their final at-bat to tie the game 4-4. Maryville's shortstop Nick Dean followed with some late inning heroics of his own with a game-winning RBI single to rightfield to plate Andrew Mabini.
MC's Matt Dyer threw seven innings scattering only five hits while surrendering only one earned run. Cody Midgett pitched a solid relief inning with a pair of strikeouts. Nick Bowers did not pick up the save opportunity due to the Cougar rally, but earned the victory after closing the door in the ninth inning.
Offensively, the Scots pounded out 10 hits. Landon Tally was 2-for-4 with three RBI's while Travis Scates, Jesse Crisp, and Garrett Gresham each stroked a pair of hits.
In the exciting nightcap, Averett earned their first USA South win of the season after 12 innings of exciting baseball. A Taylor Davis sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th gave the Cougars a 5-4 lead. The game was scoreless until the top of the 8th when Jordan Kidd hit a solo homerun off starter MC Travis Brackett. Averett tacked on another run to chase the righty. MC answered with solo runs in the 8th and sent the game into extra innings when Nick Dean drove in Garrett Gresham to make the score 2-2. Averett added a pair of runs in the 10th and Maryville answered with two runs on a Jesse Crips 2 RBI single to right field. The Cougars took the game with Davis' final inning sacrifice. Davis came in from first base to secure the victory with his first save of the season.
MC's Trevor Bracket threw seven inning of six hit ball, surrendering only a pair of earned runs. Reliever Robbie Britt suffered the loss after and inning of work.
Offensively, Maryville posted eight hits. Nick Dean and Matt Jones were the only Scots with multi-hit performances.
Maryville (3-1, 1-1 USA South) will host Averett (3-1, 1-1 USA South) for the final game of the home series on Sunday. First picth on MC's Scotland Yard is scheduled for 2:00.
