Box Score 2 The Maryville College diamondmen earned a USA South split with a 3-1 loss and an 11-4 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon on MC's Scotland yard.
Maryville could not get the bats going in the first challenge. Wesleyan starting pitcher scattered seven Scots' hits over 8.2 innings of work to limit MC to only one earned run.
The Bishops scored a run in the first when a two-out single drove in Justin DiSanto who had earlier walked. NCW doubled the deficit in the second when James Johnson was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate when Hayden Williams grounded out to second base for the RBI. The visitors scored an insurance run in the fifth inning when another DiSanto walk made it around the bases following a J.J. Rodriguez RBI single.
MC's Matt Dyer (0-2) suffered the loss after scattering five hits over six innings while walking five. Will Beasley moved to 2-2 on the season after picking up the win for Wesleyan. Maryville's seven hits attack was supported by Travis Scates' 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Maryville quickly rebounded after the loss and woke up their bats while taking advantage of a few Bishop miscues.
The Scots' Trevor Brackett picket up the win on the mound (2-1) after six innings of seven hit hurling. MC scored a pair of runs in the third inning off key RBI's by landon talley and Zack Blonder. MC plated a trio of runs in the fourth when a Dan Oakleif double led off the inning. A Garrett Gresham infield single sent oakleif home and Shawn Ambrose scored an unearned run on an NCW error. Gresham later scored on the Bishops' second error of the inning. Maryville added three runs on a pair of hits in the seventh and another three runs in the eighth.
Offensively, Landon Talley went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Garrett Gresham finished 3-for-5 with a runs scored and three RBI's. Shawn Ambrose went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in while Zack Blonder added a 2-for-5 performance with his team leading 24th RBI.
With the double header split, North Carolina Wesleyan goes to 10-16 on the season and 7-7 in the USA South standings while Maryville evens their record to 10-10 and 7-7 in USA South challenges. The series finale will take place on Sunday at 2:00 on MC's Scotland Yard.
