Box Score Maryville College's Mackenzie Puckett exploded for a 30-point effort and the Scots used a strong second half surge to pull away for a 75-59 victory over Greensboro College on Friday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Scots shot almost 47% in the first half, but the Pride kept pace with a 43% effort from the floor. Going into the beak Maryville had only a 35-31 advantage.
A 40-point second half off a 48% shooting effort allowed MC to pull away. The Scots earned the victory at the charity stripe hitting 92% of their shots while out rebounding the Pride 37-30.
Greensboro (6-3, 2-1 USA South) was led by a double-double outing by Chevena Pickard. Pickard hit 7-of-16 shots including three treys for 19 points while leading the Pride on the boards with 10 rebounds. Shanita Hampton added 11 points and six rebounds.
Maryville (9-3, 2-1 USA South) was paced by Puckett's double-double. The sophomore hit 11 –of-20 shots while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line for her second 30-point performance of the season. She also led the Scots on the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds. Lauren Burnet connected on a trio of treys for 13 points while post player Kelsey Brown went 5-for-7 from the floor for 10 points and six rebounds. Point guard Lailah Farmer had a strong performance with nine assists, three steals, and six rebounds.
The Scots will host Methodist University in another USA South challenge on Saturday. Tip-off in the Cooper Athletic Center is slated for 2:00.
