Box Score The Maryville College Scots used a late run and a 90-percent outing at the charity stripe to pull off a 72-62 comeback win over Centre College on Saturday night.
Maryville trailed by as many as 21-11 during the first half, but quick shooting brought the Scots back into the game. Lauren Trent, along with freshmen Haley Talbott and Rachel Hawn, quickly went on a 10-2 run before Joanna Young's jumper gave Maryville a 25-23 lead.
The Scots would maintain that lead until Alexis Guy hit a long trey for a 35-33 halftime score. Maryville shot a consistent 45.2 percent in the first half, while connecting on 4-of-11 3-pointers. Centre held a 38.5 percent mark, while shooting 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from beyond the arc.
Centre opened the second half with a flurry of made shots to take a 42-35 advantage. However, Mindy Brackins found her mark, hitting three straight treys from the corner to give Maryville at 44-43 lead.
The game stayed at a two-point margin until 2:45 remaining. Maryville was able to take the victory behind 8-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe in the final two minutes.
The Scots bucketed 17-of-19 free throws on the evening, while shooting a consistent 40 percent from the field.
Brackins, following her string of 3-pointers, led Maryville with 14 points, while shooting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Alex Bond and Mackenzie Puckett each found nine points, while Joanna Young had eight points, seven assists, five rebounds and two blocks in her debut as a Scot.
Freshmen Talbott and Hawn each had six points for Maryville, as Hawn, Bond and Linley Dunn led the Scots with six rebounds.
Centre was led by an 18-point outing by Alexis Guy, as she shot 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Michele Judy added 16 points, while Maggie Hartlage had 10.
Judy, who pulled down eight rebounds, paced the Colonels on the boards. Alanna Guy had seven assists.
Maryville moves to 1-0 on the season, as they prepare to travel to Centre College on Nov. 21 for the Centre College Classic. The Scots will face Thomas More for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
