Box Score 2 The Maryville College Diamondmen began the 2014 season with a double header sweep of Centre College on Sunday afternoon on MC's Scotland Yard.
Maryville won the first challenge with a 6-0 shutout. Sophomore hurler David Clifford struck out six Colonels while scattering four hits over seven innings to earn the win on the mound for the Scots. Tyler Hopkins and Joe Jones closed the door with perfect innings to close the door and preserve the shutout. Centerfielder Garrett Gresham went 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI to spark MC's offense. Zack Blonder added a pair of hits in MC's nine hit attack.
In the nightcap, Maryville claimed the victory in extra innings by the score of 6-5. Zack Blonder stroked a bases loaded single to right field to score Garrett Gresham for the walk-off win. On the mound, Trevor Brackett struck out eight in six innings in his senior debut. Matt Dyer earned the win tossing the final two innings scattering three hits and allowing no runs.
The Scots (2-0) will host Transylvania University for a three game series this weekend. A Saturday double header is slated for a 1:00 first pitch. Sunday's challenge against the Pioneers will begin at 1:00.
