Box Score Maryville College Head Coach Darrin Travillian picked up his 100th career win in a 64-47 victory over William Peace University. With the win, Travillian becomes the fastest coach to 100 wins in Maryville College women's basketball history.
In his fifth season, Travillian has complied a career record of 100-25, posting a winning percentage of .800. In three season within the USA South, the head coach has put together a 33-5 record within conference play, while winning the USA South Southern Division title in each of the past two years.
Travillian has led the Scots to a 12-1 beginning to the 2014-15 campaign, as the squad ranks No. 22 in the D3Hoops.com national poll and No. 23 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's USA Today poll.
He joins only two other coaches to have won 100 wins in women's basketball at Maryville College.
"It's really e xciting, and it's really gratifying," Travillian said. "For me, the most special part was, as you're looking at the clock winding down, as you're looking around, you see all the faces of the former players that are here and obviously the players on the bench. Just knowing that from day one, what we set out to try to build here was a program that kids were proud of and would be connected too like a family. When you look up and see all those faces, you realize that you're getting there, and you're building that kind of program. The 100 wins are a byproduct of all the great kids and all the great coaches that I've been lucky enough to work with since I started here."
The Scots had a sluggish first half, going back and forth with the Pacers, trailing 21-20 at the 2:49 mark. Maryville pulled away in the closing minutes for a 30-23 halftime advantage behind two treys by Mindy Brackins and two jumpers by Alex Bond.
The Sc
ots wouldn't relinquish the lead again, as the closest William Peace would pull would be 33-30 with 16:11 remaining in the second half.
However, four straight buckets for Mackenzie Puckett, followed by a lay-in and a 3-pointer by Jordan Ballard sent Maryville on an 11-0 run to go ahead 46-32. The Scots shot 7-of-9 from the charity stripe within the final 7:09 to hold on for the victory.
Maryville shot 46.7 percent from beyond the 3-point line, and was led by Puckett's 23 points. The junior posted three assists, two blocks and two rebounds to go along with her point total.
Brackins bucketed 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, while Bond posted 10 points to go along with four assists, two rebounds and two steals. Joanna Young had seven points, while grabbing three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block. Rachel Hawn tallied six points, while pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.
Ballard also had a complete night, posting six rebounds, five points, five steals and three assists, while Linley Dunn posted two points.
William Peace was led by Ka'La Jordan's 17-point effort, as she posted seven rebounds. DeJah Cheathem had 11 points, while Derrica Jones led the Pacers with eight boards.
The victory extends Maryville's win streak to 11 games, something Travillian credits to his defense.
"It's been great. The script has been similar," he said. "We've typically come out and guarded people hard for 40 minutes and tried to make enough offensive plays. As long as we're defending, I think we can win against anybody. It's been exciting. These kids have been amazing, and they've worked so hard. The great thing about this team is that we've got so many that are willing to step up and make plays, but at the same time, they're more than happy to defer to each other. Whoever's feeling it gets their chances."
The Scots will host N.C. Wesleyan tomorrow, as Travillian looks to keep Maryville with a perfect record within the USA South.
Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
