Box Score The No. 23 ranked Scots used a flurry of free throws and some quick treys to advance to 10-1 on the 2014-15 season with a 58-47 win over Sewanee.
The Tigers jumped out to an 8-2 lead early behind two quick 3-pointers and a slicing lay in. Rachel Hawn kept Maryville alive, bucketing a jumper of her own before converting two straight free throws to pull within 8-4 with 17:09 on the clock.
Maryville wouldn't take the lead, however, until Mindy Brackins — the USA South leader in 3-point percentage — knocked down a key 3-pointer at the 12:50 mark for a 10-8 advantage.
Sewanee's Kelley Meyers and Maryville's Lauren Trent traded treys, before the Scots would hold the lead for good.
The Scots bucketed 10-of-13 free throws in the first half, while the Tigers failed to have an attempt at the charity stripe. Maryville knocked down 5-of-12 3-point buckets in the first half to take a 29-17 lead at the break.
The Scots stretched the lead to 32-19, before Sewanee would find extra momentum in the paint — finishing the evening with 24 points in the paint to Maryville's 12. The Tigers shot 57.1 percent (12-of-21) in the second half, cutting the lead to 47-43 with 5:45 remaining in the contest.
Maryville mounted an 11-0 run behind Jordan Ballard, Joanna Young and Alex Bond to put the contest out of reach.
This is the third game this year, and the second game in a row that the Scots have held their opponents to fewer than 50 points. Maryville has held opponents to just 56 points per contest this season — that number falling to 51.3 over the past six games.
Bond led the Scots with 11 points and seven rebounds to go along with three assists on the night. Young tallied 10 points and seven rebounds — dishing out three assists to match Bond.
Trent had nine points, while Mackenzie Puckett totaled seven. Brackins had five points, as Hawn and Linley Dunn each bucketed four. Ballard had three points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block for a complete game.
The Tigers (7-3) were led by two 10-point scorers in Hannah McCormack and Casey Hassett, while Hassett dished out three blocks on the evening.
Savannah Rose and Kayla Sewell each tallied a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.
The No. 23 ranked Scots face a road swing next, traveling to Greensboro on Friday for a 6 p.m. start. Maryville will face Methodist at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
