Box Score The No. 11 ranked Maryville College women's basketball team overcame a poor shooting night to defeat Rhodes College 48-43 in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday evening.
Both team combined for a 12-for-60 (20%) shooting effort from the floor leading to an 18-18 halftime score.
The Scots created some cushion in the third quarter out pacing the Lynx 19-13 behind eight points from Lauren Biliter after a bucket and pair of three-pointers and five points from a basket and trey from Mindy Brackins.
Rhodes closed the gap to 39-37, but baskets from Allyson Freiermuth and Mackenzie Puckett along with key free throws by Joanna Young and Rachel Hawn allowed MC separate and secure the key South Region road victory.
Rhodes (2-3) finished the game hitting 28% (15-for-53) from the floor and 26% (6-for-23) from beyond the arc. The Lynx were paced by Catherine Eckert's 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Eckert and Symone Daniel led the hosts with eight rebounds.
Maryville (4-0) hit only 32% of their shots and 23% of their long-range attempts. Rachel Hawn was strong in the post with a team-high 12 points and six rebounds. Mackenzie Puckett added 10 points and seven rebounds. MC out rebounded the Lynx 46-39 with Jordan Ballard leading the Scots on the boards with eight rebounds.
"Tonight was not a thing of beauty, but we will take a hard fought road victory," stated Maryville College head coach Darrin Travillian. "Rhodes will be a team that will be in the hunt in our region, so we are fortunate to come out with a 'W'. Defensively, we did some very good things, and we hit the boards. Offensively, we couldn't throw it into the ocean, but we took care of the ball and hit some key free throws to seal the win."
The Scots will challenge Hendrix College to conclude their Memphis swing on Sunday with a 4:00 p.m. scheduled tip-off.
