Box Score After a slow start, it was Allyson Freiermuth that had a big finish to lead Maryville to a 59-43 victory over Oglethorpe University on Friday night.
The 5-foot-10 junior forward tallied a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds for Maryville. She also had three steals and two blocks.
Freiermuth's fourth quarter was impressive, as the first-year Scot tallied 12 of MC's 19 points in the quarter, while pulling down six of her eight rebounds on the evening.
"That run we went on in the fourth quarter, it was pretty significant," Head Coach Darrin Travillian said. "Allyson Freiermuth just went beast mode on everybody and started making plays everywhere. Defensively, we got a few steals that got us some transition buckets. We just did enough to get a win."
Behind Freiermuth, Maryville put together a 19-5 run in the fourth quarter to separate a game that was 40-38 at the end of the third.
The Scots started the game unable to find a bucket. Maryville went 3:30 without a bucket. Halfway through the first, Maryville trailed 8-2, shooting just 10 percent from the floor.
"Offensively, what you saw for us was the final exams hangover," Travillian said. "Finals are tough here. It's a very, very tough week. We went out there just kind of going through the motions."
Maryville found their rhythm behind later in the quarter, following a key trey by Jordan Ballard. The Scots shot just 26.7 percent (4-of-15) during the first quarter, as they trailed 15-11.
The second quarter saw a better outing, as Maryville posted a 46.2 percent shooting effort. Lauren Biliter found two 3-pointers, scoring six of Maryville's 15 in the quarter.
A trey by Oglethorpe's Emily Buck off the assist by Bailey Charles would leave the Stormy Petrels leading 27-26 at the break.
The second half, however, was all Maryville. The Scots (6-1) gave up only 16 points in the second half to take the victory, 59-43.
Freiermuth led all scorers and rebounders with 16 points and eight boards. Biliter tallied 11 points behind 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, while Joanna Young had nine points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Mackenzie Puckett had seven points, six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block, while Ballard had six points and three assists. Mindy Brackins and Rachel Hawn each had four points, and Hawn found six boards. Haley Talbott had two points, while Brittany Johnson added three assists.
For Oglethorpe (4-5), it was the freshman Charles that led the way with 15 points, as she added five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Dannelle Carroll had nine points, while Lauren Ransom had seve rebounds to lead the Stormy Petrels.
Maryville will host Covenant College tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 12. The USA South Athletic Conference matchup is slated for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
