Box Score The Maryville College Scots broke the tie atop the USA South Southern Division, as Orange and Garnet takes sole possession of first place in their division with a 62-41 win over the LaGrange College Panthers.
Both LaGrange and Maryville had been tied for first place within the USA South Southern Division. However, an early 10-1 advantage for the Scots helped them to 11-1 record within the conference.
The Scots would extend that lead to a 31-17 margin at the break.
During the opening moments of the second half, LaGrange opened on a 4-0 run, but that's as close as the Panthers would get after a Darrin Travillian timeout slowed their momentum.
With the victory, Travillian moves to 107-26 in his Maryville career, tying him with Dee Bell for the second-most wins in Maryville College basketball history. Travillian trails only Wes Moore, who holds a 129-35 record with the Scots.
Maryville shot an amazing 50 percent from the floor, while converting 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from beyond the arc. The Scots also used 19 Panther turnovers to gain 17 points in the contest.
Maryville was led by Mackenzie Puckett's double-double. The CoSIDA Academic All-District player finished the contest with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while adding three assists, two steals and two blocks.
Mindy Brackins and Lauren Trent had nine points each, while Rachel Hawn had eight. Jordan Ballard and Kelsey Brown each contributed five points, while Ballard had a game-high five assists. Linley Dunn had three points, Alex Bond, two and Brittany Johnson, one.
LaGrange College could only muster a 31.1 percent day, while shooting 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from beyond the 3-point line.
The Panthers were led by a pair of bench players, as Shaye Butler and Jeris Johnson each added seven points.
Maryville moves to 19-2 on the season and 11-1 within the USA South, while LaGrange falls to 15-5, 10-2 with in conference play.
The Scots will look next to host a two-game weekend. Maryville will play Huntingdon College on Saturday, Feb. 14 for a home tipoff at 4 p.m. They will face a rematch with LaGrange inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Sunday, Feb. 15. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
