Box Score Timely hitting and consistent pitching earned Piedmont College a sweep of Maryville College on the baseball diamond this weekend. The Lions completed the weekend with a 7-3 win over the Scots on Sunday to stay undefeated on the young season.
Piedmont touched junior left-hander Lawson Wishard for a pair of runs in the first inning to go up 2-0. An RBI groundout by Evan Gresham and a bases loaded walk to Austin Brick put the Lions ahead.
The Lions went up 5-0 in their next offensive inning on a pair of wild pitch runs and an RBI single by Breck Davidson.
Maryville earned their first run in the bottom of the second inning when John McDermott singled to right field and scored when Greg Vourloumis doubled down the leftfield line.
Piedmont tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth when Davidson doubled home Gresham. Brick sent Davidson home on an infield single to make the score 7-1.
The Scots took advantage of a bases loaded walk in the fourth by Andrew Henry to score Sam Jokerst to make the score 7-2.
MC tallied their final run in the bottom of the seventh after Zack Blonder led off the inning with a double down the right field line. A two-out single by Jokerst sent Blonder home making the score 7-3.
Piedmont advanced to 3-0 on the season and 3-0 within the USA South behind the strong efforts of a trio of hurlers. Starter Max Oberkofler went four innings scattering seven hits while surrendering a pair of earned runs. Reliever Luke McDonald earned the win with three innings of two hit work. He allowed only one earned run while striking out three. Josh Thomas closed the door with two innings of no-hit relief.
Maryville falls to 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in USA South play. Lawson Wishard suffered the loss allowing four earned run on four hits in two innings of work.
Piedmont's offense was supported by first baseman Breck Davidson's 3-for-5, two RBI afternoon. Will Skidmore added a pair of hits from his leadoff position.
The Scots finished with a nine hit attack led by Zack Blonder's 2-for-5 effort.
Maryville will now prepare for a three game USA South series in Montgomery, Alabama. The Scots will challenge Huntingdon College beginning with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday evening.
