The Maryville College women's tennis team picked up their first regular season and USA South Conference match with a 9-0 shutout of Averett University.
With weather postponements and cancellations, the Scots played in their first match of the 2015 season on the road. MC's men fell 6-3 in the action.
"Our women played well," Co-Head Coach Millicent Dunn said. "It was a 100 percent solid team effort. Even though we came up short in the men's match, it was a vast improvement and had many encouraging steps toward our ultimate goal."
Maryville's Maddy Little won her singles match over Hannah Mattson, 6-3, 6-2, while Kayla Lewis defeated Morgan Epstein, 6-4, 6-0. Maddy Reilly topped Jessie Oomes in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0, as Mary Mac Alexander beat Riley Smith, 6-1, 6-0. Caitlin Jennings swept Katie Abelseth in two 6-0 sets, as Katie Stephens won Andy Josis in two close sets, 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles, Little and Reilly won 8-2, while Alexander and Lewis won 8-5. Jennings and Tessa Wilcox won 8-4 for the 9-0 sweep.
In men's action, Daniel Silva won as the top seed for MC, defeating James Wright, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0, while Dakota McMahan won as the sixth seed. Maryville's Koki Agata fell to Nick Overton, 6-0, 6-0, while Averett's Alex Terentiev won 6-1, 6-1 over Braxton Long. Grabriel Rodriguez fell to Carlos Lora, 6-0, 6-1, while Will Marttala lost 6-3, 6-1 to Rustam Aliev.
Dakota McMahan and Grabriel Rodriguez won their doubles match for MC to finish 6-3 in the first match of the season.
Maryville's women's team will face Mary Baldwin on Sunday afternoon on the Scots' home courts. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
