Box Score 2 A complete-game, one-hit shutout by Maryville pitcher Kayla Aloisi and a walkoff RBI sacrifice fly by Jessica McMahan lifted the Scots to their most wins since the 2012 season.
Maryville won the 8-0 shutout over the Piedmont Lions behind Aloisi's stellar effort inside the circle.
Aloisi picked up the win, allowing only one hit in the complete game shutout. She had two walks and a hit batsman in the opening inning to load the bases, before pitching out of the jam and allowing only one baserunner through the final four innings. She had one strikeout.
The victory pushes the Scots to 9-19, giving them their most wins since Head Coach Leah Kelley's senior season at Maryville College. During the 2012 campaign, the Scots won 16 games. The victory over the Lions pushes them past their eight-win mark from last year.
The Scots struck first in the day's second game, as Rachel Taylor scored on a catching error by Piedmont's shortstop. Caitlyn Hogg singled down the left field line to score Jennie Burks from second, giving Maryville a 2-0 lead going to the third inning.
Hogg found her third hit and second RBI of the day with a single up the middle. Pinch runner Brittany Patmon scored from third, after advancing on a single to left center by Savannah Cook. Kazdyn Cooper walked to load the bags, before Tiffany Brand used a two RBI single up the middle to score Cook and Hogg. Megan Mihaliak followed suit with an RBI single of her own to center, scoring pinch runner Jessica McMahan from third. After the four-run fourth, Maryville led 6-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Maryville again found the plate. Cydnee Morrisette scored after a Cook single, as the third baseman tossed it over the head of the first baseman. Hogg loaded the bases, as she drew the walk. McMahan used a walk-off sacrifice fly with an error to score Burks from third for the 8-0, five-inning shutout.
Hogg finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and a walk, while Brand was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Burks went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while McMahan had a run and the game-winning RBI.
Jessica Bagwell went 1-for-1 to lead the Lions during the second game.
A six-run fourth inning put the Lions in control of the first game of the day.
Piedmont College found the plate first, as Abby Smith singled up the middle. She advanced to second on a wild pitch, stealing third just a pitch later. Jessica Bagwell singled to left to score Smith from third. From there, the Lions put together a two-out rally that included five runs in through three batters. Whitney Wolfe used a two-RBI single to right to score Bagwell and Allison Vaughn, before Abby Atkinson followed suit with a two-RBi single to center, scoring Wolfe and Lauren Bearden. An error allowed Atkinson to score, giving Piedmont a 6-0 advantage.
A sacrifice bunt by Atkinson scored Vaughn who doubled earlier in the top of the sixth to give Piedmont a 7-0 win.
Maryville saw Mihaliak, Morrisette and Cook in go 1-for-3 for the Scots' only hits of the game.
Piedmont's Wolfe was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Vaughn went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Bagwell was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the game.
Maryville will host Transylvania University on Friday afternoon for a non-conference double header. First pitch for that game is slated for 3 p.m.
