Box Score 2 The Maryville College Softball team celebrated their six seniors on Friday night, taking No. 8 Emory University to the wire and forcing extra innings.
The Scots celebrated Jennie Burks, Tiffany Brand, Lexie Randolph, Hannah Youngdeer, Caitlyn Hogg and Kalyn Jones for their four-year careers in the Orange and Garnet.
Emory struck first in the opening game, as Taylor Forte singled to left to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt and a groundout moved her to third, before a Tara Fallahee used a double to left to score the runner. Going to the bottom of the third, the Eagles led 1-0.
Emory would take that lead to the bottom of the seventh, where senior Caitlyn Hogg would find her 10th shot of the season to extend her season record. The blast knotted the game a 1-all, forcing extra innings.
The Eagles used three hits in the top of the eight, though, to take the lead away from the Scots. Fallahee used an RBI single to left to score courtesy runner, Micah Scharff from second. Fallahee would score soon after behind a single to left by Ashley Powers, as Emory would take the win, 3-1.
Maryville was led by Hogg's 1-for-3 day that saw the only RBI and run for the Scots. Jessica McMahan went 2-for-3.
For Emory, it was Fallahee that went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Forte was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while pitcher Sydney Carpenter accounted for nine strikeouts and only three hits.
Maryville struck first in the second game, their bats coming alive after the Senior Day celebration. The Scots added three hits in the bottom of the first, as an error helped to load the bases. Megan Mihaliak used a single up the middle to score Hogg and McMahan to give Maryville a 2-0 lead.
A leadoff single by Fallahee put runners on, before Ashley Powers scored the Eagle speedster with a double to the warning track in left center. Carpenter found left-center with a single of her own to score Powers to knot the score at two in the top of the second. The Eagles continued to rip apart the left-center game, as Amy Wray found a three-run shot, before Turnquest added a triple for the Eagles. Scharff scored Turnquest with a single up the middle, to give Emory a 6-2 lead.
Another big inning in the top of the third extended the Eagles' lead. Brianna Berceau and Wray each added RBI singles, before Scharff tallied a two-RBI single to right. She was able to score off an error, giving Emory an 11-2 advantage.
Gracie Taber added a two-run homer to right-center during the top of the fifth for a 13-2 Eagle lead.
Hogg drew a walk in the bottom of the fifth, before stealing second for her 14th stolen base of the season. Mihaliak scored the senior with a single to left-center. Kalyn Jones followed suit with an RBI single to center, scoring Mihaliak from second for a 13-4 final in five innings.
Mihaliak finished the game going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Burks went 2-for-3. Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI for Maryville, while Hogg scored two runs.
The Scots wrap up their season with a 14-25 record, recording the most wins since the 2012 campaign.
