Second half offense, stout defense send Scots past WPU

Box Score

The Maryville College Scots tallied a huge second half against USA South Athletic Conference foe William Peace University on Saturday night, as MC remained perfect in conference play with an 85-48 win.

Maryville found themselves trailing 33-31 at the half, but the second half was a different story.

The Scots outscored the Pacers 54-15 in the second half to move to 5-0 in USA South play.

"Clearly a tale of two halves in every way," Maryville Head Coach Darrin Travillian said. "Our defensive intensity and determination to get stops weren't there in the first half. However, the entire team rallied behind our senior guards, Jordan [Ballard] and Joanna [Young] and their sheer grit."

Ballard and Young combined for 11 steals, seven assists and six rebounds to help Maryville to the victory, but it was again Madison Maples that led the way in the scoring column.

The sophomore tallied 21 points on 9-of-12 shooting to lead Maryville.

The Scots shot 54.8 percent (34-of-62) from the floor, while knocking down eight treys.

"Offensively, our approach was much more indicative of who we want to be in the second half," Travillian said. "The assists truly reflect our execution and selflessness. Seeing so many people put up numbers is very gratifying."

Maryville (11-2, 5-0 USAS) shot impressive in the second half, tossing in 23-of-31 shots, which was good enough for a 74.2 percent effort from the floor.

Lauren Biliter followed Maples' 21-point effort with 19 of her own, shooting 7-of-12 on the day. Allyson Freiermuth had 12 points and five rebounds – 10 of her points coming in the final period. Rachel Hawn matched Frieiermuth with 12, while Linley Dunn added eight points.

Haley Talbott scored seven points, while Mackenzie Puckett had seven assists, five rebounds and two points. Young added two points to go with her six steals, while Abby Navarro tallied a points and three boards.

Maryville had 18 steals and 25 assists, while outrebounding the Pacers, 35-23.

For William Peace (5-9, 0-6), it was Brittany Boykin that led the way with 16 points. Susannah Sykes added 11 points, while Dejah Cheatham had nine.

Maryville will have a week off from action, before traveling to Meredith College on Jan. 22. Tipoff for that game is set for 6:30 p.m.
