Box Score Maryville College's Madison Maples dropped 23 points on Saturday afternoon, as the sophomore helped Head Coach Darrin Travillian tie as the winningest coach in Maryville College women's basketball history.
Maples led the Scots that scored 46 second-half points, as MC gained the USA South victory, 77-49.
The victory ties Travillian with former Lady Scots' Head Coach Wes Moore as the winningest coach in the women's basketball program. Travillian holds a 129-30 record, while Moore posted a 129-35 record in his six-year career.
Travillian and his Scots will have the chance to surpass Moore on Wednesday night, as they travel to Piedmont College for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff between the top two teams in the USA South.
"Greensboro is the reigning USA South Conference tournament champion, and they beat us here on our floor to get it," Travillian said of the day's contest. "There was a little more motivation for our kids to get this one."
After a back-and-forth first half, Maryville held only 31-25 lead at the break. However, the Scots allowed only 24 second-half points from the Pride, while shooting 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from the floor to secure the key USA South victory.
Maryville (15-2, 8-0 USA South) currently sits in second place within the conference just one game back from Piedmont College (14-4, 9-0). The winner of Wednesday's contest will hold control, as Greensboro sits in third place with a 6-2 conference record.
Maples led all scorers with 23 points, while shooting 9-of-12 (75 percent) from the floor.
Travillian said she's been a welcome help to his squad after transferring in during January.
"Madison Maples, since she's gotten here has been a tremendous boost to our team," he said. "Everybody knew when [Mindy] Brackins went down, we were losing some fire power. Madison has come in and given us a really good lift. The kid can just score. There are times that she has no idea what we are doing, but she just knows how to play basketball. I made the joke the other day, 'It's like that guy you play with in the Y.M.C.A. who can just score every time he touches it.' She just that kind of player."
Allyson Freiermuth added a double-double effort with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Lauren Biliter added nine points, six rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. Mackenzie Puckett had eight points to go with four blocks, while Ballard added eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
