Box Score Maryville College advanced in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Wednesday, as the Scots dished out a 3-0 shutout over Agnes Scott College.
The fourth-seeded Scots posted three unassisted goals in the contest to advance past the fifth-seeded Scotties in the West Divisional tournament, as the Orange and Garnet earned their 10th victory of the year.
Maryville will face the West Division's top-seeded team, Salem College, on Saturday Oct. 29. The match – set in Winston-Salem N.C. – will begin at 2 p.m.
The Scots posted an incredible 31 shots on Wednesday night – tallying 17 on goal. Those 31 shots rank atop the MC record books during the USA South tournament, besting the Scots 28 shots from last year against Greensboro College.
The stellar Maryville defense earned its 10th shutout of the season, holding Agnes Scott to only five shots. The Scotties found two on goal, as keeper Rachel Taylor turned away both.
MC's Mandy Marshall earned the win in goal to move her record her 10th win of the year. Marshall's 10th shutout ranks her tied as the fifth-best season in the Maryville record books, as she is tied with Desi Simmons (2009), Catherine Fowlkes (2003), Wall of Famer Marquita Porter (2002) and Wall of Famer Lara Sibold (1992). She is only two shutouts away from the Scots' record of 12 set by Lindsay York in 2007.
The Scots struck midway through the first half, as Natasha Enrique pushed a goal past Iara Moran. Enrique dribble past the defender and into the box. She shot from 15 yards out to earn the eventual game-winner, 1-0, with 20:17 showing on the clock.
Less the four minutes into the second half, Maryville would strike again. Casey Gentile – who tallied eight shots on the afternoon – made the score 2-0. She shot from the left side of the box. It tipped off Moran's hands, bouncing off the post and into the top right corner. The Scots held a two-goal advantage just 3:47 into the second half.
Gentile's eight shots and five shots on goal tie the MC record within the USA South Tournament, as she matches Sierra Siegel's mark from 2012. Both Siegel and Allyson Hale have tallied five shots on goal, as Siegel had reached the feat twice.
Less than five minutes later, Gabby Billstrom would give MC the final score, 3-0. Billstrom dribbled into the box, shooting from 25 yards out. Her show sailed to the middle of the net, just over Moran's reach. The goal ranked as Billstrom's first of the 2016 season.
Elsewhere in the conference, three-seeded Piedmont defeated Huntingdon, 4-0, as both higher seeds advanced in the West Division tournament.
In the East Division Tournament, however, both of the lower seeded squad earned upsets in the opening round of the tournament. Sixth-seeded Greensboro downed three-seeded Ferrum College, 3-0, while No. 5 Averett took down fourth-seeded N.C. Wesleyan, 1-0.
All four quarterfinal matches are set for Saturday, Oct. 29, at the higher seeds home site.
