Box Score The No. 18 Maryville College Scots opened the 2016-17 season with a bang, as they earned the 61-point victory, 90-29, over Mary Baldwin University in Danville, Ky.
Senior Allyson Freiermuth tallied a double-double effort against the Fighting Squirrels with 16 points and 10 rebounds, as Mindy Brackins and Madison Maples each finished in double digits.
Maryville saw 44 points from the bench, while scoring 52 points in the paint. The Scots scored 34 points off turnovers, after forcing 29 Mary Baldwin turnovers.
Friday's loss marks Mary Baldwin's 105th consecutive loss dating back to Feb. 11, 2012.
Maryville opened the game on an 18-0 run spurred by six points from Rachel Hawn, five from Maples and four from Freiermuth. Anna Ramirez would break the silence for the Fighting Squirrels at the 6:15 mark, as she scored a lay-up to make the score 18-2.
The Scots would continue their flurry of points, though, as they posted a 14-0 run after the Mary Baldwin score. Maryville led 32-2 at the end of the first quarter, with Hawn and Freiermuth each contributing eight points.
The Scots would extend their run to 19-0 behind a trey by Biliter and a lay-in by Freiermuth, before Ramirez stopped the run, again with a lay-up. MC led 37-4 with 7 minutes remaining in the first half.
With 4:40 to go, Brackins followed a Haley Talbott trey with a 3-pointer of her own. Khaihiqa Davidson and Aayana Nedd got in on the scoring for MBU, as the Scots led 47-9.
MC would take a 41-point lead to the locker room at the break, 54-13. The Scots shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the opening half, bucketing five treys on a 45.5 percent clip. Maryville forced 19 Mary Baldwin turnovers, converting that to 23 points.
Freiermuth had 12 points to lead Maryville, narrowly missing a double-double in the first half with seven boards. Hawn, Biliter and Brackins each had eight points, as Hawn had six rebounds to follow Freiermuth.
Nedd had six points for the Squirrels, as they show 17.9 percent from the floor.
The Scots continued their dominance, as they opened the second half with a 9-0 run behind a trey from Maples and four points from Freiermuth. A 3-pointer by Amber Hudgens gave Maryville a 66-17 lead with 3:27 left in the third quarter.
Lecretia Robbins ended the quarter with a trey, as Maryville held a 74-22 lead going to the final stanza.
The Scots' bench would take over for the fourth to secure the 90-29 victory.
Maryville (1-0) was led by Freiermuth's double-double effort of 16 points and 10 boards. She also had three steals and a block in only 15 minutes of play.
Brackins came off the bench to score 13 points for Maryville to go with two rebounds and a steal. The senior shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, including a 2-for-2 afternoon from beyond the arc. Maples scored 10 points on a 2-for-2 effort from the 3-point line, while adding a trio of steals in only 12 minutes.
Hudgens – a transfer – had nine points, seven boards, three blocks and two steals, while Hawn had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Biliter tallied eight points to go with five assists, while Talbott (5), Robbins (5), Chelsey Harness (4), Catherine Upshaw (4), KayLynn Wilkerson (4), Delaney Lowery (2) and Kelley Wandell (2) all got in on the scoring.
For Mary Baldwin (0-2), it was Davidson that finished with nine points, while Ramirez had seven and Nedd, six. Davidson had a game-high 13 rebounds, while Nicole Blackburn had 12.
Maryville will look to face off with host school Centre College tomorrow, Nov. 19. Tipoff for the non-conference game is slated for 3 p.m.
