Box Score The No. 14 Maryville College Scots held on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Denison University in the Julie Costello Memorial Classic at Thomas More College, 65-53.
The Scots held a six-point lead for the majority of the game, but Addie Buzas sank a 3-pointer with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter.
From that point, MC went on a 9-0 run to earn the non-conference victory
Maryville College held a 33-25 advantage at the break, after shooting 39.4 percent from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Scots forced 10 turnovers in the opening half, while posting 10 points off those Denison miscues.
Maryville held Denison to a 10-of-27 effort in the first half.
The Scots saw Rachel Hawn finished the opening half with eight points, while Lauren Biliter had seven. Allyson Freiermuth led MC with six boards through the first two periods.
For the contest, however, Maryville saw four Scots finish with double-digit scoring.
Madison Maples finished with 14 points, as she shot 6-of-12 from the floor. Maples had six rebounds and an assist.
Freiermuth had a near double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, while fellow post Hawn had 12 points. Biliter had 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Mindy Brackins had eight points, while Haley Talbott had six points. Libby Gardner added a pair of free throws to secure the win, while Amber Hudgens and Brittany Johnson each had three assists for Maryville.
The Scots shot 41.3 percent (26-of-63) from the floor, while bucketing five 3-pointers. MC outrebounded the Big Red 42-37, while controlling the paint with 36 points down low. Denison tallied 16 turnovers, as Maryville took advantage with 16 points.
For Denison, it was Jordan Holmes and Allison Schafer. Holmes had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Schafer just missed matching her with 14 points and seven boards. Gabrielle Nottage led the Big Red with six assists.
Denison shot 21-of-62 (33.9 percent), while netting eight treys on a 32 percent clip.
The Scots return to action tomorrow in Crestview Hill, Ky., as they face off with Wittenberg University. Tipoff for that game is slated for 2 p.m.
