Box Score The Maryville College Scots used a strong second- and third-quarter surge on Thursday night to defeat the Colonels of Centre College, 72-47, inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Scots (6-2) scored 45 points in the two quarters, stretching their lead to as far as 32 early on in the third fourth quarter. MC boasted a 48.5 percent effort in the second and third quarters from the field, while going 42.9 percent from beyond the arc with six treys.
After a 13-6 lead after the opening period, 7-0 run in the middle of the second to make it a 26-13 game. The Scots would extend that to a 14-7 run in the later half of the second quarter, allowing only two field goals in the final 8:34 of the half.
Maryville's third quarter proved even more impressive, as they started the second half on a 10-0 run in the first 1:20. In fact, the Scots only needed 29 second for the run, as they forced two turnovers. MC tallied a pair of offensive rebounds and a pair of steals in the run, as Allyson Freiermuth began the quarter with seven points of her own to help Maryville to a 43-20 lead.
In the first three minutes of the third quarter, the junior tallied five points and seven boards on her way to a double-double for the night.
On the night, however, it was Madison Maples that led the way. The junior scored a game-high 23 points, while raking in two rebounds and two steals. She went 8-of-16 from the floor, while bucketing an incredible 6-of-8 (75 percent) from beyond the arc.
Lauren Biliter had 12 points, three rebounds, two assist and a steal, while Freiermuth finished with her double-double of 11 points, 11 rebounds. She had three steals, two assists and a block to her credit, as well.
Brittany Johnson had five points and five assists, while Lecretia Robbins added five points with a trey. Kelly Wandell had four points and five boards, while Amber Hudgens matched Wandell with five rebounds and three points. Haley Talbott had three points and a game-high four steals.
Rachel Hawn added two points and seven rebounds, while Libby Gardner had two points and a game-high six assists.
Freshman Taitlyn Chesser scored her first collegiate points with two, as she went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe. She also had a steal.
Maryville out-rebounded the Colonels, 45-25, while making good of their opportunities. MC committed 21 turnovers, but forced 23 from Centre. The Scots bucketed 23 points off those miscues, while the Colonels could only muster eight.
MC shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60), while going 10-of-25 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. The Scots bucketed 16 free throws at a 76.3 percent clip.
Centre College (2-6) was led by Caroline Andreassen and Meredith Hobbs who both finished the game with nine points. Day Vance led the squad with five rebounds, while Ami Ballard added five assists and a pair of steals.
Centre shot just 38.3 percent (18-of-47), while bucketing 6-of-15 treys.
Maryville will travel next to Averett University for the East-West Classic. The Scots will face Averett in non-conference action at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18, before taking on Ferrum – also non-conference action – on Monday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m.
