Box Score The Maryville College Scots fell in heart-breaking fashion on Monday afternoon, as Ferrum College erased a 14-point deficit to defeat MC late, 65-63.
After leading by as many as 14, Maryville (8-3) held a 49-37 lead going into the fourth quarter. However, Ferrum out-paced MC, 28-14 during the fourth quarter to earn the comeback win.
The Panthers (5-5) started the fourth on 12-0 run, as Maryville couldn't convert a bucket in the first 4:08. Madison Maples ended the drought with a lay-in at the 5:52 mark, before adding a pair of free throws for a 53-49 Maryville lead.
A trey from Ferrum's Brooke Lewis, followed by a pair of free throws from Zarkia Mattox gave the Panthers the lead again with 3:53 left, 56-55. The two teams traded leads, before Mattox, Kelli Mounce and Maggie Self each combined to five Ferrum a 62-57 lead with 2:05 left.
Rachel Hawn would down four straight free throws for a 62-61 deficit with only 32 second remaining.
Erin March hit a pair of free throws, before Allyson Freiermuth would follow suit. Mattox's 1-of-2 attempt at the other end would give Ferrum a 65-63 lead, before Haley Talbott's half-court, desperation shot clanked off the front of the rim for the final.
After holding Mattox to only nine points through the first three quarter, she went off in the fourth with 17 points. Mattox shot 7-of-7, while going 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She had four rebounds, four steals and two assists in the 10-minute quarter.
Ferrum managed a 68.8 percent effort in the fourth (11-of-16), while recording seven steals and five assists.
The Panthers had runs on both ends of the game, after starting the contest strong.
Ferrum got off to a 7-0 start in the first minute of action, before Rachel Hawn was able to break the silence for Maryville. The Panthers would stretch their run to a 9-2 advantage, before the Scots would take a run of their own.
MC used a 9-0 run that was started by six straight from Lauren Biliter, before a Haley Talbott trey off a Libby Gardner assist would give the Scots their first lead, 11-9, with 4:04 to go win the first half.
They would only continue that string of success, but the first quarter would end with a 15-15 tie.
The Scots would outscore Ferrum, 22-10, in the second quarter, however, for a 12-point advantage before the break.
Maryville used a 13-2 run to end the half, as Delaney Lowery bucketed two back-to-back treys in the run. Her final trey would give Maryville a 37-25 lead going to the break.
Maryville shot 35.3 percent (12-of-34) from the field in the first half, as they were helped by five treys. The Scots out-rebounded the Panthers, 23-16, holding on to 11 offensive boards. They turned those into nine second-chance points to make the difference in the first half.
Madison Maples led the way with 10 point, while Lowery had seven on a 2-of-2 effort from behind the arc. Biliter and Hawn each had six, while Freiermuth had a huge first half with seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, two points and a block. Amber Hudgens matched Freiermuth with seven boards, as the duo combined for eight of Maryville's 11 offensive rebounds.
Ferrum saw Self finish the first half with a game-high 13 points. Mattox had five as the next closest Panther.
For the game, Maryville was led by Madison Maples 18-point outing. She bucketed two treys, while going 6-of-7 at the free-throw line on the day. Hawn had 12 points to go with eight boards, an assist and a steal for Maryville.
Biliter had eight points, while Lowery finished with seven. Talbott had six points, and Hudgens, five, as she finished the day with seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks and an assist.
Freiermuth had four points and a team-high 12 rebounds, as she added five assists, three blocks and two assists. Lecretia Robbins had three points.
MC shot just 31.7 percent for the day, going 20-of-63. The Scots were outpaced on the boards, 39-37, pulling down only 14 rebounds in the second half.
After her stellar fourth quarter, Mattox finished with a game-high 26 points. She shot 9-of-13 on the day, while going 8-of-10 at the free throw line. Mattox had eight rebounds, five steals and four assists in the game.
Self had 19 points for the Panthers, while Jessie O'Conner had 10 rebounds. Mounce added six assists for Ferrum.
The Scots will now have the Christmas break off, as they return home on Dec. 30 to face Rhodes College. Tipoff inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium is slated for 4 p.m.
