Box Score 2 Behind the stellar pitching of Seth Debity and Jeremy Ibarra, the Maryville College baseball team swept the Sewanee Tigers 12-6 and 2-0 on Friday evening on MC's Scotland Yard.
Following over five hours of snow removal by the team, the scheduled double-header tossed out the first pitch at 4:30.
During the opening challenge, Debity scattered eight hits over 6.1 innings of work to collect his first mound victory of the season. The senior right-hander allowed only a pair of earned runs while striking out six. Bill Woodruff and Jordan Norton added 1.2 innings of one-run, one-hit relief.
MC's offense was paced by five Scots posting a pair of hits. Andrew Henry was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Chris Ervin was 2-for-4 with 2 runs driven in. Brendan Lawler deposited a homerun onto Honaker Field during a 2-for4, three RBI performance. Zack Blonder finished 2-for-5 while Clifton Dempsey came off the bench for a 2-for-2 effort while playing a strong second base.
Maryville finished with 15 hits off four Sewanee hurlers.
In the night cap, Jeremy Ibarra shutout the Tiger offense with a complete game three-hitter on the mound. The senior right-hander struck out five and battled pitch-by-pitch with Sewanee's J.T. Hintzen. Hintzen suffered the loss after allowing only a pair of earned runs on three hits while striking out seven Scots.
A scoreless game was broken up in the bottom of the sixth by the Scots. A pair of one-out walks brought senior first baseman Zack Blonder to the plate. He stroked a single to right field scoring Logan Jenkins. Chris Ervin drove in the insurance run with a fielder's choice giving MC a 2-0 advantage. Ibarra closed out the seventh 1-2-3 and Maryville advanced to 3-2 on the season.
Tyler Bigler and Andrew Henry collected the only other hits for MC in the second challenge.
Maryville is now 3-2 on the season as Sewanee falls to 0-5. The Scots will travel to Sewanee, Tennessee on Sunday for another NCAA Division III non-conference challenge with the Tigers. First-pitch is slated for 12:00 noon CST.
