Box Score The No. 15 Maryville College Scots used a 22-point fourth quarter and a 25-point effort from senior forward Mackenzie Puckett on Friday night to earn a 73-64 victory over Huntingdon College.
The Scots led by only two points – 51-49 – before a strong fourth quarter led Maryville to their 18th win on the season.
Puckett dropped 12 of her 25 points during the final period, many of those coming off late free throws.
Maryville held a 33-25 advantage at the half, before a 24-point outburst by the Hawks in the third quarter cut the lead.
The Scots faced uncertain ground on Friday night in Montgomery, Ala., coming up empty-handed from beyond the 3-point line. MC shot 0-of-10 from long range, but the inside game propelled the Scots.
Maryville shot an impressive 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from beyond the arc, while knocking down 25-of-30 charity tosses (83.3 percent) in the contest to help them to the win.
The Scots out-rebounded their Alabama counterparts, 44-32, while crashing the boards for 16 offensive boards. Maryville used a 16-point bench effort in the victory.
Puckett led the Scots (18-3, 11-1 USA South) with 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The forward also went 11-of-12 from the charity stripe, while pulling down four rebounds.
Lauren Biliter had 10 points to go with a team-leading six rebounds and three assists, while Allyson Freiermuth, Jordan Ballard and Rachel Hawn each added eight points. Freiermuth and Hawn each matched Biliter's team-high six rebounds, while Ballard added a team-high five assists.
Joanna Young and Madison Maples each had six points, while Haley Talbott tallied two.
For Huntingdon, (9-10, 4-8) it was Juliette Harp that led the way with a double-double effort behind 13-of-18 shooting. Harp had a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds, while tallying four blocks in the game.
Jello Weatherspoon had 19 points as the only double-digit scorers for the Hawks.
Maryville will travel to LaGrange College tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 13, as they face off with the Panthers. Tipoff for that contest is set for 4 p.m.
