Aloisi's gem shuts out Wasps in MC Invitational, 6-0

| Box Score 2

Kayla Aloisi pitched a gem on Sunday morning, helping the Scots to a 6-0 shutout over Emory & Henry College.

The senior hurler for Maryville College tossed a complete game, allowing only five hits on the afternoon.

Aloisi improved her record to 3-2 on the season, while striking out three batters.

"Kayla has consistently been our go to and has shown the other pitchers what it looks like to be consistent and successful at the college level," Head Coach Leah Kelley said. "She is our go to and someone we can really count on right now."

Aloisi faced 28 batters in the contest, as the Scots' defense helped her preserve the shutout victory.

Maryville got the scoring started early in the first inning. Alexus Murray blasted her first collegiate home run with a three-run shot over the left field fence. The play scored Rachel Taylor and Savannah Cook, as the Scots took a 3-0 lead early.

Emilie Craven scored during the fourth inning, after she singled to third. She was advanced to second, before stealing third. She reached the plate two batters later. Maryville led 4-0 going to the bottom of the fourth.

In the fifth, the Scots would add another run. Murray singled to center field, before Elizabeth Wheeler used an RBI double to deep center field to score the speedy catcher. After five innings, Maryville led 5-0.

Savannah Cook would take it upon herself to score the game's final run. The speedy center fielder singled to second, before stealing second two pitches later. She would advance to third on a wild pitch, scoring on the same play.

Maryville (3-5) was led by Murray's 3-for-3 effort, as she added three RBIs and two runs. Taylor went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Cook was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Craven was 1-for-4, scoring a run, while Jenna Roberts went 1-for-3. McMahan finished the day 1-for-5, while Mihaliak went 1-for-4.

Emory & Henry College (2-2) saw Madison McClanahan go 1-for-1, while Jordan Chrisley was 1-for-2. Three other Wasps finished the day 1-for-3, as Aloisi held them to only five hits.

During the day's second game, the Scots looked to continue their offensive attack, but a late rally by Centre College ended the Scots' hope of entering USA South Athletic Conference play with a .500 mark.

The Colonels scored six runs in the top of the sixth to fend of Maryville with a 9-6 final score.

Centre College (2-2) struck first, as Ellen Stephens scored off a Jessika Young RBI single. However, the Scots would strike back in the bottom of the same inning, as McMahan was able to score of an RBI sacrifice fly by Elizabeth Wheeler. After one inning, the Scots and Colonels stood deadlocked at 1-all.

Maryville would break the tie in the bottom of the second. Roberts would find the play behind McMahan's RBI single to third base, helping the Scots to a 2-1 lead early in the game.

Centre would take control again, however, in the top of the third. Tori Silcox used an two-RBI double to left-center to score Alisha Russell and Stephens. However, Maryville would knot the game a 3-all in the bottom of the inning, as Emilie Craven would slice an RBI double down the left field line. Going to the fourth, MC and Centre remained tied.

That would change in the bottom of the fourth, as Maryville plated three runs. Taylor used an RBI groundout to score Roberts, before Murray's bunt single to the pitcher scored Cook. McMahan would score on the throw during the play, as the Scots led 6-3 going to the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, however, Centre would find momentum. They scored six runs on five hits that included a two-run home run by Ashley Merkin to seal the 9-6 victory over Maryville.

The Scots saw McMahan finish the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Cook went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Roberts was 1-for-3 with two runs. Wheeler was 1-for-2, while Murray was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI to her credit. Taylor and Morgan Corland each went 1-for-3, while Mihaliak and Craven finished the day 1-for-4. Craven also had an RBI.

Centre saw Stephens go 2-for-3 with three runs scored during the contest, while Makayla Hawkins was 1-for-1 with two RBI and a run. Young, Silcox and Merkin each added two RBIs on the afternoon for the Colonels.

Each team in the MC Invitational went 2-2 on the weekend, ending the tournament in a tie.

Maryville will open USA South Athletic Conference play this Saturday, as they host Covenant College for a double-header at noon and 2 p.m. On Sunday, Maryville will host Milligan College for a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. start time.
