Box Score The Maryville College Scots couldn't overcome 11 stranded runners on Tuesday afternoon, as they fell to Berry College, 8-3.
Maryville had a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, but left the bases juiced for the second time on the night.
Maryville falls to 18-7 on the year, while the Vikings move to 18-8.
Berry College got the scoring started in the first inning. Ben Jernigan used an RBI single down the left-field line to score Alfred Francis as the Vikings took an early 1-0 lead.
They added to that in the top of the fifth, as Casey Whitaker used a solo homer to left-center. The leadoff hitter for the inning gave Berry a 2-0 lead over the Scots.
The dagger came in the top of the eight, when the Vikings plated eight runs off of only three hits. Berry loaded the bases off of three walks – including one intentional – and a sacrifice bunt. Brady Smith found an RBI single to left to score Francis, before Greg Keel used a two-RBI single up the middle to score Devin Skelton and Jernigan. Devin Post scored Smith off an RBI double down the right-field line, before Austin Haight used a sacrifice fly to score Keel. Following the fifth, Berry held an 8-0 lead over Maryville.
The Scots came alive in the bottom of the ninth, however, as they attempted to rally. Two hit-by-pitch and a single by Robbie Young loaded the bases for the Scots, before Clifton Dempsey would use and RBI fielder's choice to score Tyler Bigler. Dan Oaklief would score off a sacrifice fly by Andrew Henry, before a Johnny Carpenter was hit by a pitch and credited with an RBI. Maryville would leave the bases loaded, however, as J.P. Chamblee came in to secure the save on the mound for the Vikings.
Maryville used eight hits to score three runs, as they were led by Logan Jenkins who went 2-for-5. Zack Blonder was 2-for-5, while Dempsey went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Young was 1-for-1 with a run scored, while Oaklief and Bigler each plated a score. Andrew Henry and Brendan Lawler also went 1-for-3 for the Scots.
Maryville saw eight pitchers come to the mound on Tuesday night.
Berry used a 12-hit attack to score their eight runs, as they were led by Keel's 2-for-3, three-RBI day as the right-fielder also scored a run coming off the bench. Post went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while eight other Vikings posted hits. Francis scored two runs on the day for Berry.
Maryville College will return home on Friday afternoon, as they play host to USA South Athletic Conference foe Huntingdon College. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
