Box Score 2 The Huntingdon College Hawks spoiled Maryville College's senior day with an 8-4, 5-0 sweep of the Scots on Saturday helping Huntingdon to claim the key USA South baseball series. Just after MC head coach Cody Church and his staff honored their eleven seniors, Huntingdon's Zach McGrady and Jared Gonzalez tossed a pair of gems to propel Huntingdon towards a pair of wins.
Game 1:
Huntingdon 8, Maryville 4
Huntingdon took an early lead in their first at bat when right fielder Anthony Spivey deposited his fourth homerun of the season-a two run blast to left field-giving the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.
In the third, Huntingdon moved to a 3-0 lead when first baseman Jordan Criswell singled in lead-off hitter Patrick Kucera.
MC's Tyler Bigler led off the the bottom of the fifth inning getting hit by the pitcher. Shortstop Brendan Lawler stroked a double down the right field line sending Bigler to third. Catcher Jacob Frost dropped a double just over the head of the third baseman to drive in the Scots first pair of runs.
Following a two out error by the Scots in the seventh, Huntingdon capitalized with a pair of unearned runs driven in by second baseman Mason Throneberry with a single to centerfield off MC reliever Jordan Norton.
Huntingdon tallied a pair of runs in the eighth when four consecutive bunts loaded the bases for the Hawks. RBIs by Josh Hines and Alec Raley gave the visitors a 7-2 lead.
MC's Chris Ervin made the score 7-2 with an infield ground out in the eighth scoring Zack Blonder who earlier doubled.
The Hawks Jordan Criswell blasted his first home run of the season off Scots' reliever Tyler Hopkins.
The final run cam across the plate in the Maryville ninth when Johnny Carpenter placed a two out RBI single to left field scoring Andrew Henry. Henry was MC's only offensive performer with a pair of hits finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Huntingdon's Zach McGrady(4-3) earned the win on the mound scattering five hits and allowing only three earned runs over eight innings of work. Maryville's Jeremy Ibarra (3-4) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits over six innings.
The Final score for the second game of the series was Huntingdon 8, Maryville 4.
Game 2:
Huntingdon 5, Maryville 0
Huntingdon's Jared Gonzalez held a Scots team hitting .313 on the season to only six scattered hits, shutting out Maryville for only the first time since their opening series on February 6th with nationally ranked Rhodes College. Maryville seniors Zack Blonder and Chris were the only Scots to record a pair of hits during the league loss.
The Hawks scored a pair of runs in the first off MC starter Lawson Wishard (2-1). A fielder's choice RBI by Jordan Criswell and an RBI bunt single by Cheston Wesson gave Huntingdon a 2-0 advantage.
A suicide squeeze by Josh Hines and a two-RBI double by Patrick Kucera completed the Hawks scoring in the fourth inning giving HC the 5-0 victory.
The sweep advances Huntingdon to 17-11 overall and 7-5 in USA South play. MC falls to 19-9 and 9-6 in league action.
The Scots will return to the field on Monday when they host Rust College for a non-conference NCAA Division III doubleheader. The first pitch slated against the Bearcats will be 4:00 on MC's Scotland Yard.
