Box Score The Maryville College Scots picked up a key win on Tuesday afternoon, downing No. 26 Berry College, 6-2, in Rome, Ga.
Maryville's Lawson Wishard tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just five hits and two runs – neither earned – in the victory. He walked only four, before Jordan Norton came in to pitch the final 2.2 innings.
Norton went pitch perfect, allowing no hits, no runs and no walks. He struck out two, holding on for the Scots' 23rd win of the season.
The Scots added two runs in the top of the first, as they loaded the bases with Chris Ervin's bunt single to third. Johnny Carpenter laced a two-RBI single up the middle to score Zach Blonder and Andrew Henry, as Maryville led 2-0 after one inning.
They would add another in the top of the second. Logan Jenkins used an RBI single through the right side to score Clifton Dempsey to make the score 3-0.
The fourth and fifth, Maryville added an additional run to make the margin 5-0 after five innings. Blonder added an RBI to score Jenkins in the fourth, before Henry scored Evan Ezell in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single to shortstop.
Berry would find the plate during the bottom of the seventh to end Maryville's 5-run rally. Aided by a Maryville error, Jacob Delk singled to right, finding the RBI to score Slade Dale. Grant Perkins grounded out to second, scoring Delk for a 5-2 ball game.
However, Norton would shut the Vikings down from that point.
Maryville added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as Ezell earned the RBI with a single to shortstop. The play scored Carpenter for the 6-2 final.
Maryville College (23-11) was led by Carpenter's 2-for-3 day, as he posted two RBI and a run scored. Ezell went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Henry, Jenkins and Dempsey each went 2-for-5. Dempsey scored a run, while both Henry and Jenkins had a run and an RBI. The Scots will have no time to rest, however, as they return home tomorrow, Wednesday, April 6, to face Johnson University on Scotland Yard.
The game is being played for "Strike Out Cystic Fibrosis," as the Scots will be taking donations for the "Great Strides" walk against the disease.
First pitch for the game is slated for 7 p.m.
