Box Score The Maryville College women's basketball team opened their 2016-17 USA South schedule with a dominating 55-40 over league and division rival Piedmont College on Sunday afternoon in MC's Cooper Athletic Center.
With aspirations of their fifth USA South title, the Scots used a 51-30 rebound margin to pull away from the Lions in the third quarter.
"I thought our kids did an outstanding job attacking the boards, especially the offensive glass this afternoon," stated MC head coach Darrin Travillian. "We took advantage of numerous second basket opportunities today."
Maryville's offense featured a pair of double-double performances by Allyson Freiermuth and Lauren Biliter. Freiermuth posted a game-high and career-high 14 rebounds that featured six offensive boards while pouring in a dozen points on 50% shooting. Biliter hauled down nine boards while dropping a game-high 13 points from both the perimeter and within the paint. Haley Talbott was deadly from long distance with a trio of treys finishing with a game-high 13 points. Rachel Hawn was strong in the paint with nine rebounds while tossing in eight points. Junior transfer Amber Hudgens had one of her most complete performances in the orange and garnet with a career-high eight rebounds while going 4-for-7 from the floor for nine points.
The Scots' stingy defense forced Piedmont to shoot only 23% from the floor (13-for-56) while the Lions could not find their outside touch with a 16% effort (5-for-30).
Piedmont (9-5, 2-1 USA South) was paced by Bridgette Kelly's 12 points. Amari Price added 10 points on 50% shooting.
Maryville (9-3, 1-0 USA South) will now prepare for another conference divisional foe in Covenant College. MC will host the Georgian Scots on Tuesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off scheduled.
