Box Score 2 The Maryville College Scots swept day one of the Maryville College Invitational, as they downed the Mountaineers of Berea College and the Centre College Colonels.
The Scots dominated Berea in six innings, winning 9-1, before earning the shutout over Centre, 3-0, in the day's last game.
Maryville struck early in the first inning, hanging three runs on Berea College. After a pair of walks and a single by Alexus Murray, the Scots loaded the bases. Ashton Hayden scored on an error, before Murray was able to score on Morgan Brewer's sacrifice fly. Jessica McMahan earned an RBI with an infield, bases-loaded single to second, scoring Rachel Taylor. After the first inning, Maryville led 3-0.
The Scots again found a flurry of runs in the top of the fifth inning. After a pair of walks, Aly Snider laced an RBI single to center to score Murray. Morgan Brewer followed suit with a two-RBI shot off the right-center fence, narrowly missing her first homer. Grace Gordon and Snider scored on the play, before McMahan gave Maryville a 7-0 lead an RBI single to center.
Berea got on the board during the bottom of the fifth, as Riley Lanham earned an RBI with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch. Chelsey Parsons scored on the play, as Maryville led 7-1 after five innings.
The Scots would answer in the top of the sixth, as Taylor found the RBI with a single to right. Hayden scored on the play, leaving runners on second and third. Snider earned the RBI with a bunt to the pitcher to score Murray, as the Scots led 9-1.
The Scots scored nine runs on nine hits with 8 RBI in the contest. Hayden led the way with a 2-for-3 effort, while scoring a pair of runs. Snider went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while McMahan was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Brewer went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Murray went 1-for-2 with three runs plated. Taylor added a 1-for-2 effort with a run, an RBI and two walks.
Josie Milam earned the win in 4.1 innings of work, as she moved to 3-0. She allowed just one run on four hits while striking out one. Casey Joliff pitched 1.2 innings in relief, keeping Berea without a hit in her stint. She allowed just two walks while compiling a pair if strikeouts.
For Berea, it was Nash that finished the day with a 2-for-2 effort. She scored one run, while Lanham went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
In the day's second game, Maryville rode pitcher Morgan Corland to a 3-0 shutout of the Colonels of Centre College.
Corland pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits. She struck out five in the dominating performance, while only allowing one walk.
After loading the bags in the bottom of the second, Elysse Petrie was called for an illegal pitch. The play scored Christen Torres from third, as Maryville took at 1-0 lead after two innings.
Maryville struck again in the bottom of the sixth. Joliff – a pinch hitter – fouled off multiple pitches before bouncing a ball off the left-center fence to score McMahan with an RBI double. Two pitches later, Essence Strambler followed suit, hitting nearly the same spot on the fence with an RBI double of her own. Going to the top of the seventh, Maryville led 3-0.
Maryville finished the game with nine hits on the day. Torres led the way with a 3-for-3 effort with a run scored. Joliff went 1-for-1 with an RBI, while Roberts was 2-for-2 with a run scored. McMahan added a 1-for-3 effort with a run scored, while Murray and Strambler bot added hits. Strambler added an RBI.
For Centre, they were held to only four hits in the shutout.
Abigail Harmer led the way with a 2-for-3 effort for the Colonels.
Maryville will return with a double header tomorrow, Feb. 19, in day two of the Maryville College Invitational. The Scots will play at noon and 2 p.m.
