Box Score 2 The Maryville College Scots' softball team went 1-1 during the Grand Slam Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. today, while defeating host school, William Peace University, 9-2.
Maryville lost the first game of the day, 7-4, as the Scots led eight runners stranded on the afternoon.
In the day's first game, Maryville got things started with a run in the first inning. Ashton Hayden singled to center, before she was able to steal third. Hayden scored on a passed ball for the unearned run and a 1-0 ball game.
Maryville would add three runs on four hits in the top of the third. Rachel Taylor hit her first homerun of the season – a three run shot – scoring Hayden and Alexus Murray on the play. The Scots would lead, 4-0, going to the bottom of the third.
N.C. Wesleyan would find momentum in the bottom of the inning off two Maryville errors. Shelby Godwin used an RBI single to score Alicia Burns, before Payton Hyler's single to left would score Brittany Manning. Both runs ranked unearned.
The Battling Bishops would continue to battle in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs. Kaitlyn Checkan homered for a two-RBI shot, scoring Kaeli Farnsworth on the play. Godwin would score Burns on an RBI single four batters later, as N.C. Wesleyan led 5-4. They would add two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Burns would score a pair of runners on a sacrifice bunt error for the final, 7-4.
Hayden led the way with a 3-for-4 day, scoring two runs. Taylor went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Murray was 1-for-4 with a run. Jessica McMahan went 2-for-3, while Morgan Brewer was 2-for-4. Jenna Roberts added a 1-for-3 afternoon.
For N.C. Wesleyan (1-2), it was Godwin who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Checkan went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
In Maryville's second game of the day, however, it was all Scots. Maryville scored nine runs on only seven hits in the game for the victory. The win moves Maryville to 8-2 on the young season.
William Peace scored their only two runs of the ball game in the first inning off a Maryville error. Lindsey Wiggins laced an RBI double to right-center to score Jordan Mangum who had reached on an error. Shay Poteat would add an RBI single to score Wiggins three batters later for a 2-0 Pacers lead.
The Scots wouldn't find footing until the bottom of the second. Aly Snider and Grace Gordon would each score on separate wild pitches in the inning, knotting the game at 2-all going to the third.
Maryville would again add two in the bottom of that inning. Taylor would add a two-RBI single to her already impressive day, as Hayden and Essence Strambler would score on the play. After three, the Scots led, 4-2.
MC would tack on an extra run with a Roberts' RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, before Christen Torres added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
The Scots scored three in the bottom of the sixth, as Murray added a two-RBI single to score Hayden and Roberts. Taylor added an RBI to score Murray from second, as the Scots would take the win, 9-2.
Taylor went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Murray was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Hayden was 1-for-4 with three runs plated, while Torres was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Strambler, Gordon, Snider and Brewer each scored a run.
For William Peace, five different players recorded a hit in the five-hit game. Wiggins added a run and an RBI in the contest.
Maryville will look next to face Hood College tomorrow at 9 a.m., before facing Salisbury at 11 a.m.
