Maryville splits with LaGrange on Saturday with 9-0 win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Maryville College split with USA South foes LaGrange College on a cold and snowy Saturday afternoon on the field of the Maryville High School Rebels.

The Scots won the first game by way of run rule, 9-0, before their rally fell just short in game two, 3-2.

The loss marks Maryville's first USA South miscue on the season, as they still sit atop the Western Division with a 5-1 mark. Covenant College, Piedmont College and Huntingdon College all sit tied at second with 4-2 records.

Maryville is set to play Huntingdon tomorrow, March 11, with a noon start. The game is still pending based on weather conditions.

After going scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, Maryville plated their first runs after putting a pair of runners on. An infield single by Aly Snider scored Ashton Hayden from second, before an RBI single to right-center plated pinch runner Grace Gordon. After three complete innings, the Scots led 2-0.

LaGrange had their first real threat in the top of the fifth inning, as an error and a single put runners on second and third with only one out, but the Scots managed a lineout and a fly out to end the inning unscathed.

In the bottom of that inning, Maryville put runners on second and third after back-to-back walks and a wild pitch. Christen Torres used a blooper of the first baseman to score Taylor from third, before an errant throw on Torres' steal plated Snider from third. Roberts would score Torres from second with an RBI single to right-center, before Essence Strambler would score Roberts with a single to left. An error would score the shortstop from second, as Maryville led 7-0 going to the sixth inning.

After Taylor drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the sixth, Snider laced a two-run home run over the left-center wall to end the game with the run rule. The Scots took the win, 9-0.

Snider led Maryville in the win, as the freshman went 3-for-3 with a trio of RBI and a pair of runs scored. Roberts went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Strambler, Hayden, Brewer and Torres each added hits. Strambler and Torres had a run and an RBI, while Brewer had an RBI. Hayden and Grace Gordon each added runs, while Taylor scored a pair of runs on three walks.

Nicole Blackburn earned the win in the circle, as she pitched 5.0 innings. She allowed just four hits in the shutout, as she struck out five of the 21 batters she faced. Casey Joliff closed things out with a perfect sixth as the Scots earned the win.

For LaGrange, four different players contributed hits in the game.

In the second game of the day, LaGrange struck early in the top of the first. A single by Chelsea Twardowski allowed Emily Barrs to earn the RBI with a single to left-center. Twardowski scored from second, giving LaGrange a 1-0 lead. An error with runners on the corners allowed Barrs to score from third, before a single by Adrienne Little scored Sydney Hodorff from second. The pair of unearned runs allowed the Panthers to take a 3-0 lead early on.

After loading the bags with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch, Maryville's Josie Milam came in to get the Scots out of the inning. Milam caught a line drive, tossing it over to Brewer for the double play to end the inning without the Panthers adding an additional run.

Maryville plated their first run in the bottom of the sixth after a Snider single. Torres put an RBI double off the fence in right field. McMahan added an RBI with an infield bunt single, as Maryville pulled to within one, 3-2, going to the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Roberts managed a single, a steal and an advance to third on a groundout with only one out on the day. However, the Scots couldn't push the tying run across, as LaGrange took game two, 3-2.

The Scots saw Roberts hits 2-for-3 in the seven-hit game for Maryville. Strambler, Hayden, Snider, Torres and McMahan and recorded hits, as Torres had an RBI and a run scored. Snider added an RBI to her tally for the evening.

For LaGrange, they had six hits in the game. Barrs led the way with a 2-for-3 effort with a run and an RBI.
