Scots extend win streak to five with sweep of Wesleyan, 9-5, 8-0

Maryville College moved to 13-3 on the season on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots scored their 100th run of the season.

MC swept USA South Athletic Conference foe Wesleyan College (Ga.), after winning the first game 9-5. Maryville knocked off the Wolves in game two, 8-0, in five innings to move to a perfect 4-0 in USA South play.

Throughout the 2017 season, the Scots have now outscored their opponents 116-36. The heavy-hitting offense of the Orange and Garnet now average 8.3 runs per contest, while winning seven of their 13 games by way of run rule.

However, the Scots face their toughest challenge on Tuesday – weather permitting – as they host No. 4 Berry College. First pitch for the double header is slated for 1 p.m.

On Saturday, Maryville's offense continued, as Rachel Taylor and Christen Torres both went yard. Taylor added a double, as the Scots tallied a total of eight RBI in the first game alone.

Morgan Brewer continued her big weekend, as the freshman finished the four-game streak with an .818 batting average. Brewer hit 11-for-13 on the weekend with nine RBI and five runs scored, while blasting two home runs and a double. She added a walk, a sacrifice and a stolen base to her credentials.

The Scots took game one, 9-5, after back-to-back-to-back singles to start the first inning put Maryville on the board early. Singles by Essence Strambler and Ashton Hayden were quickly followed by a stolen base for each. Alexus Murray used a two-RBI shot to right-center to score both runners. After one inning, the Scots led 2-0.

After a Murray single in the bottom of the third, Rachel Taylor blasted her second home run of the 2017 season with a bomb to right-center. Murray scored on the play, as Maryville led 4-0 through three innings.

Wesleyan struck back in the top of the fourth, aided by a Maryville College error. The Wolves loaded the bags with two outs, before Alyssa Flowers singled to left. She scored Cat Pribbenow with the RBI, before Brooke Tussinger scored Alana Walker with an RBI single to right. McKenzi Shelpman was out at the plate on the play with a big throw from Jessica McMahan to Taylor to Murray for the final out and a 4-2 advantage.

Wesleyan was again aided by an error in the fourth. After getting runners on first and second, Victoria Clower laced a hit to left. A fielding error scored Miriam Grant scored on the play, before Claire Crawford recorded an RBI to score Savanna Boyette. Going to the bottom of the fifth, the game was knotted at 4-all.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maryville stormed back. An error scored Grace Gordon who pinch ran after a double by Taylor. Christen Torres rocketed her first homer for the Scots as a transfer with a two-run shot to left field. The play scored Snider from second, as Maryville led 7-4 after five innings.

The Scots added security in the bottom of the sixth, as Murray scored off an RBI from Snider, before Brewer recorded her eight RBI of the weekend with a shot to center that scored Snider. Going to the seventh, Maryville led 9-4.

Wesleyan added a run on a sacrifice fly from Crawford in the seventh inning, before the Scots took the win, 9-5.

Maryville was led by Murray who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Taylor and Torres both added homers for the Scots, as Taylor went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Torres was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while Strambler went 2-for-4 with a run plated. Brewer continued her dominance on the weekend with a 2-3 effort with a walk and an RBI. Snider, Roberts and Hayden each added a hit, as Snider had two runs and an RBI. Hayden and Grace Gordon each added runs for Maryville.

The Scots scored nine runs on 14 hits. Both teams had a pair of errors on the day.

For Wesleyan, it was Victoria Clower who went 3-for-4 on the day. Boyette and Shelpman each had two hits on the Wolves nine-hit game.

In game two, Maryville again struck first as they claimed the win, 8-0, in five innings.

Roberts led off with a single to right, before she stole second and a wild pitch moved her to third. Murray earned the RBI with a groundout, as the Scots led 1-0 after the first inning.

Maryville added to their score in the bottom of the second, as they capitalized on two errors by the Wolves. Brewer recorded the only hit of the inning, as she scored on a fielding error. Torres drew a walk, before scoring on a throwing error as McMahan stole second. After two innings, MC led 3-0.

Murray added a triple in the bottom of the third, as she hit the warning track in right-center. Taylor grounded out for an RBI, as Maryville led 4-0 after three innings.

After the Scots got runners on second and third, Roberts used a sacrifice fly to score Torres. Going to the fifth inning, Maryville held a 5-0 lead.

Back-to-back singles by Hayden and Murray was followed by a hit-by-pitch from Taylor to start the fifth inning with the bags juiced and no outs. Snider drew a walk to score Hayden with the RBI, before Brewer recorded another RBI with a sacrifice fly to right. Sarah Gordon came on as a pinch hitter, sending a shot to left to score Grace Gordon from third, as Maryville took the win, 8-0.

Murray had another big game, as the only Scot to record multiple hits in game two. She hit 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a triple, while Torres and Roberts each went 1-for-2. Roberts added a run and an RBI with Torres scoring a pair of runs. Hayden, Brewer and Sarah Gordon all recorded hits, as Brewer tallied a run and an RBI. Hayden had a run, as Sarah Gordon plated the final run with an RBI to score Grace Gordon. Taylor added an RBI in the game.

Maryville's Casey Joliff gave up only two hits in the game, as she struck out five to earn the win.
