Scots rally to defeat Centre 10-4 on the diamond

Box Score

The Maryville College baseball team advanced to 7-0 on the season after a 14-hit offensive attack helped the Scots defeat Centre College 10-4 on Tuesday evening on MC's Scotland Yard.

Maryville had to overcome an early Colonel lead when right fielder Seth Hagan deposited a home run onto Honaker Field in the top of the third. Centre tacked on a pair of unearned runs on a trio of MC miscues.

Trailing 3-0, Maryville rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. MC's Jake Petersen doubled down the left field line scoring Patrick Messinger. Johnny Carpenter traded places with Petersen with a double of his own down the left field line plating Petersen and Andrew Henry. A Bryce Redaja single sent Carpenter home to give the Scots a 4-3 lead after three complete innings.

Hayden Hollingsworth and Andrew Henry stroked RBI singles in the fourth inning to give Maryville a 6-3 advantage.

In the fifth, MC catcher Evan Ezell singled up the middle scoring Mike Homan and Alden Wright.

Centre's Seth Hogan blasted his second home run of the evening to pull the Colonels closer in the seventh inning, but MC added a pair of runs in the bottom of the same inning when Patrick Messinger singled to right field scoring Ezell and Homan.

Maryville's Michael Hawks earned the victory on the mound scattering three hits over four innings allowing only one earned run. Jerod Dickey tossed a pair of innings striking out two and allowing only one hit. Zach McGee earned his first save of the season striking out four over the final three innings allowing only one hit.

Patrick Messinger lifted his team-leading .524 batting average with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. The shortstop scored a pair of runs while driving in two runs. Jake Petersen, Alden Wright, and Mike Homan each added a pair of hits to MC's offensive attack.

Maryville will host the Wasps of Emory & Henry College on Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
